Where do you inject it? I was told ALWAYS SQ in the abdomen. If given other areas can cause bleeds and hematoma.

Since I believe in reading product information, AND following the manufacturers information on how to give THEIR drugs. As far as giving it to a pt...who doesn't want it given as prescribed....YOU have a choice...you can refuse...and I go about my merry way...AFTER advising you of the risks of your decision...and charting your refusal....then calling your MD and let him/her deal with it. ...:)
I have discussed giving Lovenox with some of my rehab patients, who have NEVER objected to recieving it in the abdomen. They have told me that some of my fellow nurses have given it in the deltoid and " it hurts!" They say it burns!
It's always been abdomen for me. Then when I had to have some injected into MYSELF due to the discovery of a condition called FVL (Factor V Leiden), a blood clotting disorder and the discovery of a blood clot in my brain, they started me on fragmin, then lovenox shots in the abdomen. I was too sick to even do it myself. Then I was switched to oral coumadin, unfortunately have to stay on that for life now! But, definitely abdomen.
oops! That 5.98% under "other" is mine.
I read the questions wrong, thinking that the only place that Lovenox should be injected is in the lovehandles. I actually asked this question once before on this forum and thats the answer I got from all these fine nurses. I have seen patients that have been injected on the abdomen, similar sites as insulin injections, maybe a little lower and they are U-G-L-Y! Sometimes they even get hard and warm. No problems so far though with putting it in the lovehandles.

Boy Renee...:) you're so correct. To the person who voted for deltoid please read:Patients should be lying down and Lovenox injection administered by deep SC injection. To avoid the loss of drug when using the 30 and 40 mg prefilled syringes, do not expel the air bubble from the syringe before the injection. Administration should be alternated between the left and right anterolateral and left and right posterolateral abdominal wall. The whole length of the needle should be placed into a skin fold held between the thumb and forefinger; the skin fold should be held throughout the injection. To minimize bruising, do not rub the injection site after completion of the injection
Recently I have been in hospitals where pts. have objected to abdominal injections, and some nurses have given Heparin and Lovenox in the deltoid. Not me..of course..:)
sharann...I'm glad you were taught the correct way...:).
Thank you for posting all of this, I am giving my 1st lovenox injection tomorrow and with out the information at home I was worried that my teacher would ask me too many questions that the drug book doesnt cover.
I've seen patients in LTC injected with Lovenox in the deltoid, and the resulting hematoma was huge! In nursing school clinicals, we were giving alot of these and I tried to tell anyone doing them to use abdomen/love handles only- we checked all the drug books available and they all say to give in any standard sub-Q site. Until they update the info in the drug books, there will still be alot of nurses and students causing hematomas...

I was given an inservice on this medication by the drug representatives. They stated to give the subq injection in the "love handles"; never aspirate; and never rub the site.
