Ochsner or University Hospital???

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi, I am a new RN grad & have just been offered a position at Ochsner Hospital (Med-Surg unit) on the Westbank as well as the (Isolation unit) at LSU Interim Hospital (formerly university down-town). I don't know which one I should accept. If anyone has worked at either of theses facilities, your help is needed. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks:heartbeat

Does the LSU isolation unit offer the $4/hr retention bonus? It's hard to beat the state benefits, time off, etc. But parking there would be a hassle...and I don't think they offer student loan payback. Ochsner pays I think $300/mo for your student loans. That's prob the only benefit I can see for choosing Ochsner over LSU. Good luck with whatever you decide...be sure to post which one you chose and if you like it!

LSU isolation unit does offer the $4/hr retention bonus...This is why I am strongly considering working there...i'm just not sure if I wanna take on isolation patients right out of school. It maybe too much.

Specializes in PP, OR, med-surg,oncology, urodynamics.

I've worked at both. The state has wonderful benefits, and if you go to their website, you can view the information for loan repayment, it's not automatic, but it is an option. Honestly, I think a teaching facility is a great place for a new nurse to start. Good luck with your decision. :redbeathe

I worked in med-surg at the Ochsner Kenner location and it was not an organized unit. I only worked there for 2 months. I think that speaks for itself.

I currently work on the Adult Isolation unit at University and I love it. It is not stressful and we generally have a 4-5 patient ratio, which is awesome. The unit manager is one of the best. On the unit you get to see some things you would not normally see. You will still get your med-surg experience. I enjoy working on the unit. You could come by and I can show you around to help make your decision.

As far as Isolation patients over other med-surg units, I don't feel you are going to be in a more difficult field. I began in a Medical Acute Care Unit out of school. I saw many of the same type of patients we have in Isolation with a 6-7 patient ratio. However, now that I am in the Isolation unit I also get some ortho and other things I didn't get in acute care. If you are seriously considering this unit feel free to contact me via PM or on the unit.
