*Admins please do not post on facebook*
We only got 2 weeks left and I been getting depressed students lately left and right. Today one of them came in because she was worried that her friend committed suicide today because she wasn't in school today and yesterday said friend said she was going to hang herself. I was super worried and told my admin about it, apparently the friend is fine and she's talking to admin right now on the phone.
What's going on lately? I'm super worried about my kids.

I feel like for some kids the end of the year is not necessarily a good thing. At school, there's (relative) safety and routine. Summer break may mean not getting enough to eat, or it may mean being in a crappy home situation more hours of the day. I worry about a lot of my kiddos over the summer.

What's going on is that social media is killing our kids emotionally (and bodily, for that matter). Facebook, Instagram, twitter, whatever, is creating an artificial world where kids are absolved of the obligation to be "real" to one another. Sincerity and genuineness become incomprehensible in that environment. Adults do not model restraint in this regard so kids have no reason to either. Media isn't helping either.
If school nurses want to make a difference here, they'll initiate consciousness raising campaigns to address this. Its a horrible problem that isn't going away.

This. Sometimes we are their only safe place.

Most school nurses don't have the resources to initiate...we MOSTLY don't run clubs, and spearhead campaigns because we don't have the funds, nor the help for it. Mental health is health, however, so we troubleshoot 1:1 and escalate and collaborate with Admin and teachers and counselors as needed.
I'd be depressed if I went to school now, too. This is the 3rd shooting in 3 days. Yesterday's was an 11 year old boy opening fire.
Our kids know we are failing them.

so damn sad
Apparently the friend has a razor blade with her yesterday and this is an ongoing thing apparently. I'm at a lost what I can do, and I know what you are saying. A lot of my kids here are in poverty and school is the only safe place for them during the year.
C'mon...there is a solution. Turn off the f'ing one eyed monster...said the guy with an f'ing one eyed monster...
Amen to that.
