Lost New NP

Hi all I’m an new np. I went to an DNP family nurse Practitioner program and was assigned to an intensive inpatient provider role. I’ll be honest I feel like I’m drowning almost all of the time and don’t feel like I’ve had much mentorship in this role. I feel miscast. I didn’t pick this role but it was assigned as my employer paid for my education and I owe them time. I’ve asked for a new posting but I feel utterly defeated and often wish I never went back to school. I’m sorry for whining like an idiot but if anyone has advice I’m listening

OP, I recommend asking a mod to remove your post indicating where you work.

Your workplace probably has other FNPs, BUT-

If you are the one of a few FNPs at [your workplace] that they placed in Cardiology-inpatients because they gave you money for your NP program...

and an employer/fellow employee who knows you in real life happens to come across this thread...

and happens to have enough deductive reasoning skills...

This is not true at all in my experience, and I have worked both systems. UPMC are very specific about the need for ACNP certification/training for many/most inpatient roles. AHN less so, because they have only had an APP director for ~2 years, but they are certainly moving that way.

Thank you for asking and happy new year!!! I’m hanging in there. I’ve applied for a couple other jobs and am still waiting to hear. I go to work every day and give my best efforts but it’s very hard and I feel in a tough environment but I do my best. I wish you all a very happy new year

OP, I am worried for you. As at least one other poster has mentioned, an FNP working in an intensive inpatient role is working outside their scope of practice. That's a legally dicey place to be. I don't understand why your employer would do that. You were not educationally prepared for this role. Fingers crossed that you quickly find a suitable FNP position that you love. I'm sure you are very, very stressed every day. As someone trained in primary care, I know I sure would be! Happy New Year. May 2020 bring you a new job.
