Has anyone ever applied to RN positions within the sheriff's dept? I know that dealing with inmates can be dangerous work, but the pay and benefits look pretty good.

Working as a corrections nurse can be a lot safer, because you have sheriffs or corrections officers looking out for you.

I have a good friend who works at San Quentin, where California's death row is, and he's been a lot safer there than I have at my trauma center. Our security guards are unarmed and prohibited from putting hands on anyone (translation: useless).

Mina, do they give you a study guide for the written test? Do you know if they're looking to hire new grads?

The LASD doesn't give you a study guide. They will consider new grads. Keep in mind the selection process is based on your "band" placement (I-V). You need at least a combined written and interview score of 94.5% to be placed in band I. Good luck!

Here is the LA County Public health practice questions: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/phn/docs/MCE%20practice%20examrevised6-10.pdf

and answer sheet: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/phn/docs/MCE%20practice%20examrevised6-10.pdf

These documents are public information and can be accessed through the LAC public health website.
