Looking for Nursing School options

Published

I have gone back to college after 25 years and am currently finishing up my pre reqs for nursing school. I have no degree but am looking for the quickest options to finish up my BSN. Orvis Nursing School in Reno runs their semesters straight through (including the summer) so that their 4 semesters of upper level nursing courses for a BSN can be completed in 18 months. Are there any other schools which do this? I have a 4.0 GPA right now so I should be able to at least apply anywhere(getting accepted is another matter).

Thanks for any help

Mike

You could try getting your ASN first and then go back for your BSN. That way you could get in the field quicker. And you can generally get those at your local community college. If you keep up your GPA there should be no reason why you wouldn't finish on time and the program is about 2 years. The BSN is generally 3-4 unless you are already an RN or LPN and you may qualify for the accelerated programs available. Make sense? You could also try online nursing school but I have a feeling those are EXTREMELY expensive.

At the university I attend, if you've already finished your pre-reqs, then the BSN program is just five semesters. From what I'm hearing (I just started my first semester), the summers are used to take the general education courses for upper division, and our second summer is actually used for an externship.

Congratulations on returning to school!

Thank you for your replies. I will have 54 hours by the the fall of 2010. I could start an RN program at the Jr. college I am currently attending this fall, or wait an entire year, take some extra core courses, start at Orvis in Reno and have my BSN with only an additional 6 months. That is why I was looking for other Universities that completed their upper Nursing courses in 16-18 months. I have found the Univeristy of New Mexico also does this and am just trying to find all my options.

Netsearch "accelerated BSN", there are several sites that list colleges with accelerated programs that finish in the ballpark of 18 months.

Don't the accelerated programs require that you already have a BA/BS degree (in something other than nursing), though? (Which the OP says he does not have.)

Perhaps some do, I've seen some that do not.

UT Houston goes through the summer for an 18 month program.

Accelerated BSN programs are for those who already have a bachelor's.

I'm pretty sure that Excelsior is the only online program for those who don't have an RN license already. You go at your own pace, but some states (California for sure) won't let you sit for your boards.

I live near a school that offers an accelerated BSN program that has nothing to do with a second degree. That school and my current school were my top two choices. I also already knew of two others within a few hours drive that offer an accelerated program designed for *high standing OR a previous degree". I assumed from that and since the search choices on several of the "find a school" websites had both "accelerated BSN" and "accelerated second degree" as choices, that it was more common than it evidently is since y'all seem so sure it doesn't exist.

Sorry, daystarmike, that they aren't in Texas. I looked a little bit this morning and didn't see any in Texas, but I didn't look exhaustively. Good Luck in your search for a school that fits you.
