Looking for information re: RN admission to MSN program w/non-nursing BS?

Published

Hello, I'm an ADN RN with a BS in Liberal Arts and I would like to go on for a MSN. I have a found a handful of MSN programs that allow entry with only a BS but most state 'BSN required.' I know there are RN to MSN programs but what I'm really looking for is programs that will allow me to go straight into the MSN courses. I already know that I will have to take courses in assessment, research and statistics; at least that is what I'm finding. Anyone know of or attend a program like this with a 'bridge' for the RN with a non-nursing BS? So far I have found Vandy, SLU, U of Wyoming and U of Iowa--any others?

Also, a question to those of you in MSN programs or MSN graduates...would I be short changing myself by not getting the BSN before entry into the MSN? Maybe this would put me at a disadvantage? My BS did include courses that required APA format writing so I feel prepared from that standpoint. Most of the focus of my upper level courses was in Health Care Management. It had been my plan to go into an MHA program but I really feel that I want to stay with nursing now.

Thanks in advance!! ~ A.J. :nuke:

Texas Tech has an online BSN program for people with BA/BS already!

Try www.westernu.edu. I am starting the MSN-E program, but I know for a fact they have a direct entry MSN program that is distance. You will have to come back to campus a few times a semester, but it's doable. Good luck! :)

Michigan State does not require a BSN for their Master's programs.

I have a B.A. in Social Relations, which I have never used. I'm currently finishing the prereqs for an accelerated 2nd degree nursing program for an ADN. I plan to get a few years experience as an RN, then go for my Master's at MSU. Their requirments are that you have an unrestricted RN license, achieved 3.0 or better in the last two years of a baccalaureate program, completion of a 3 credit statistics class within the last 5 years, and clinical experience in nursing. This is the route I plan to take.

If you're interested in the online deal, both U of Phoenix and Walden offer MSN program for non-nursing BS students. I know U of Phoenix offers a bridge program. Walden will let you in once u have all the gen. ed. requirements completed and now they even offer gen ed through them so you don't have to take them and then enter their program.

Check out Gonzaga's Master of Science in Nursing, you have to be an RN, but as far as I know they will take non-BSN graduates.

Also, there's the Loyola New Orleans bridge program for non-BSN to MSN.

Just in case, Utica College has an RN to BSN.

Good luck!:nurse:

If you are interested in Midwifery or FNP, check out Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing. There is a bridge program for RN to MSN, and they do accept some non nursing Bachelors degrees. It's a great school, rolling enrollment, online, great reputation, very high percentage of applicants pass their board exams after graduation.

Ball State University in Muncie, IN (www.bsu.edu) has an RN to MS option. I'm going to enroll in it next year as I'm in the same situation as you. Their program is entirely online and you set up your clinics in your own community. Good luck!
