Looking for information re: RN admission to MSN program w/non-nursing BS?

Published

Hello, I'm an ADN RN with a BS in Liberal Arts and I would like to go on for a MSN. I have a found a handful of MSN programs that allow entry with only a BS but most state 'BSN required.' I know there are RN to MSN programs but what I'm really looking for is programs that will allow me to go straight into the MSN courses. I already know that I will have to take courses in assessment, research and statistics; at least that is what I'm finding. Anyone know of or attend a program like this with a 'bridge' for the RN with a non-nursing BS? So far I have found Vandy, SLU, U of Wyoming and U of Iowa--any others?

Also, a question to those of you in MSN programs or MSN graduates...would I be short changing myself by not getting the BSN before entry into the MSN? Maybe this would put me at a disadvantage? My BS did include courses that required APA format writing so I feel prepared from that standpoint. Most of the focus of my upper level courses was in Health Care Management. It had been my plan to go into an MHA program but I really feel that I want to stay with nursing now.

Thanks in advance!! ~ A.J. :nuke:

Are you going to be staying in the Midwest? Cal State LA has an accelerated RN to MSN for RNs with a non nursing BS and one for RNs without a BS. Sorry I don't know of any in the Midwest. I'm such a Cali girl. Good luck.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Yes, I'll be staying here in the good ol' Midwest for a long time. I should clarify that I've been looking for programs that offer all on-line instruction. I wouldn't mind making a few trips on-campus but I'd like the majority to be on-line.

Hello,

I have and ADN and a BS in another field. I went through UoP MSN bridge program which required me to take 3 courses from the BSN program before I was able to begin the MSN core curriculum. I didn't feel that I was short changed by going this route.

Frontier has an online program with a bridge and I know that Case Western does as well...depending on what specialty you plan to choose. I'm sure there are others. Good luck!

I'm looking for the same thing and I found http://www.excelsior.edu but I wanted a CNS MSN program.

I was enrolled and am changing only because I've decided an on-ground psych program will serve me best. I was very happy with the program. You take 4 bridge courses and then start the MSN classes.

Oh, Yeah. I forgot to mention that all the MSN nurses I talked with said since I already had a BA degree, I would not need a BSN. :)

Thanks, RN007! I did look into the RODP but the out-of-state tuition is pretty high. It looks like a great program, though. I'm originally from Nashville and could stay w/family if I needed to travel there. Oh well. Maybe if some extra money finds me. :)

Good luck to you!

Look into Frontier School for Midwifery and Family Nursing--They have a wonderful program and have a a direct route from RN to MSN--They have 2 options (ADN to MSN or RN with bachelors in other area to MSN)--Check them out--I will be finishing the program ARNP (FNP) in a couple of months, and I have been very pleased with the school--They also have a DNP program
