Hi there everyone. I'm one of the 2015 hopefuls for lonestar. Just wondering if anyone has any information on application datelines for 2015 spring. The school sites don't happen to have that info(unless, I am missing something). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck to everyone.
I graduated from montgomery in May and the only people who got hospital jobs were people who worked there already as techs, and one girl who's aunt is a DON at the place she was hired. But there were even some people who worked at techs for YEARS who were turned away by their hospital - the same hospitals who paid for their nursing program. And I'm talking about suburban hospitals, not just the med center.
A good amount (not all) of us have jobs by now, but we all went into home health, psych, corrections, rehab, etc while we get our BSNs. Not necessarily saying it's a bad thing...a lot of us are quite happy. But buyer beware! When hospitals are trying to get/keep magnet status, they're trying to keep their nursing staff at 80% BSN, 20% ADN. So they'll still hire ADNs and may LOVE them, but what they're cutting out is new grad ADNs. A nurse with experience is worth 10xs more than we are right now ?.
I just want to add that I love love love my job. Everyone wants to work in a hospital when they think about nursing, but it really isn't the end all, be all for everyone. I worked as a tech at a hospital that wanted to hire me as an RN, but I walked away from it because I kind of hated it. So unless you're sold on the hospital as the only way to go already, there are still some cool opportunities out there.
Thanks for the great advise stephalump!!.. I had something similar in mind.. to work home health, hospice, free standing ER... things like that my first few yrs whole I get my BSN, and to get the yrs of experience under my license... I worked as an MA for 3 yrs.. and even though I was always told by the docs how good I worked and how much I care for the pts, and that I was born to do this... the pay was good but not great (only 14/hr).. unfortunately in the medical field it most of the times doesn't matter how good u know u r, rather is how many yrs u have under ur belt.. the more experience, the better chance u have to land in a big hospital, and the better u can negotiate ur contract... I know is gonna be really hard in the beginning, but sometimes even the medical agencies don't hire without at least 1yr of experience... I going in the field very open minded, and knowing that I would have to start from the bottom..
Hey all, everyone relax and calm down! I'm a level 2 student and I know how anxious y'all are. It may be hard to find a job after you graduate but I think of it as only being a matter of time. You got in, got the degree now just keep moving forward and things will work out. Lonestar has early decision BSN bridge programs. Look into them, be successful in your ADN and apply to those BSN programs! Good luck to you all :)
Well thank goodness I already own a tattoo shop to help pay the bills while I go to school...my plan is to either go for my DNP or enroll in medical school but if I go DNP I'll need 2 years of critical care nursing which I prolly won't even bother applying for an RN position till I get the BSN
I know Christian... is always good to have something to fall back on, because the bills don't wait...lucky u that u have ur own business, hopefully u will be able to arrange ur hrs needed for this future adventure ... I also hope to one day become an NP
... slowly but surely i will get there...

I know in TMC it will be hard to get a job as an ADN. However, in Katy, where I live, I know for a fact that it's a real possibility to get a job at one of the hospitals. In fact, the nursing manager on the med/surg unit at Memorial Hermann would prefer to hire ADN's. My point is, try not to be discouraged. It is possible to find a job while you're continuing on to your BSN. Especially in the suburbs.
