Lonestar College Cyfair ADN Fall 2010

Published

:lol2: Congratulations to everyone who received their acceptance letters for the ADN program at Cyfair for 2010! :lol2:

Can't wait to meet you all! So, what now lol?

Joker? NO... I'm just not the serious type. I try to lighten up the atmosphere to suit my life style/attitude. Yes the class seem easier than I thought it would be. As you stated, it may all change after the first test. I will pm you my e-mail and cell in case you/me need help or anything.

Hey yall!! Its been a little while since I have posted on here, but I have a couple of questions.

1. What is this FB group everyone is talking about? What name do I need to search for?

2. Is there anyone else taking Pharm this summer? I started last week online through Kingwood and there was only one chapter on dosage... Uhm I think I will need a bit more practice! Am I in the wrong one???

Hope everyone's 'break' is going well!

Candice

Hi Candy! I was wondering if you were still around. The FB group is the one that I posted a link for on the first page. The link still works, but you have to be logged in for it to go to the group, otherwise it just goes to the log in page. If that doesn't work, try searching for LSC Cyfair Nursing Class of 2012. It's private, but not invite only, so it should show up.

I know pcrn is taking pharm online as well. Thangbom and I are both in a hybrid at Tomball. Our class hasn't done a ton as far as dosage calc--just abbreviations, conversions, and reading labels & drug orders. Oh, and using the correct tool for the dosage and route. Our only quiz so far was on abbreviations and conversions.

I don't know about y'all, but I'm not getting much of a break. Between pharm and work, I'm staying pretty busy. I'm also trying to round up all my loose ends before orientation (last shot, TB test, CPR, etc.), so all I have to do the second half of summer is gather all my books and supplies and such. Oh, and keep working and saving (er, bleeding) money.

Anyone else thought about a.m. vs. p.m. classes? Anyone else plan to try to get a.m.? I have a conflict with both (if the schedule that I came up with is right anyway), but I think a.m. will still be easier for me to work around. Less than a month now until we can finally get some info!

Candice I'm in the Kingwood online class too. Yea just a few dosage calulations thought that was strange. Did you get that email about the study group? I haven't gotten a response yet. I did call cyfair to ask about transferability and they said as long as its 1301 its the right class. It's been alot of reading so far with work and this class it seems like all I'm doing is reading in my free time, guess its preparing us for next fall :)

Kaybee- Are you taking it with Loftin? And yes, it is A LOT of reading.

Lilag- I am nervous because we are not doing abbreviations or conversions. All we have done is read, read, read, and answer some discussion questions. We only have weekly quizes, no tests or final exam. I guess it is a good thing, but I am more concerned about being able to use what I learn when I get out in the field. I want to make sure I know how to calculate a dose and what a certain abbreviation stands for. Oh well, guess I will have to do some research on my own when the class is over. What book are yall using?

And as far as the schedule, I am aiming for the afternoon classes so that I can work my mornings. We shall see how long that lasts!

Yes, I'm in the online Pharm with Loftin and am in a constant state of panic over getting all the info absorbed. Uuugggghhhh! I actually tried to drop yesterday (after talking to sweet Kathy at CyFair) but the prof asked me not to. Don't have time to post much right now but LilAg, it's definitely a different course than what it sounds like you guys are taking at Tomball. We all have GOT to get together ASAP!

Definitely sounds like our classes are different...so odd. Aside from the actual quizzes, all of our dosage calc stuff is done on our own outside of class. Do you guys have the Dosage Calculations book? If so, I can post and/or e-mail what she's having us do, if it would help. Really though, it's just reading each chapter--all of some, parts of a few--and doing the practice questions at the end.

Wow I really enrolled in the wrong class lol, yes I have Loftin. As far as the book we're using Focus on Nursing Pharmacology ed 5. As far as reading, we're reading two sections of the book a week about 230 pages in all. And yes it's tons of information! As for Dosage calculations there's one chapter in the main text that covers it in the book and another required book called Math for Nurses by Boyer.

That's about the same amount of material that we're covering, too. The required book is the same as well, however she's in the middle of switching books, so I've been using the old one (borrowed from a friend to study with) and will use the new one now that we're getting to her new pp lectures. You're right it's a ton of info, but I just keep telling myself that it's preparing me for the fall.

I just checked the bookstore, and oddly enough, Cyfair doesn't have the Dosage Calculations book listed for pharm either, but it is listed for Fundamentals. Guess we'll be learning dosage calc in Fundamentals, too? They also have a completely different pharm text. I don't know why but I figured they would all be using the same books.

I feel a lot better knowing that we are using the same book. I did purchase a calculations book from ecampus.com (I think) which is where I bought my Pharm book. Maybe we will go into depth with that when the program starts.

On another note, I did notice I am on the FB page, oops! :lol2: Seems like time is starting to fly by now that orientation is getting closer.

Hi all,

After talking with Kathy in the nursing office, I've decided to drop Pharm for now. Apparently less than 1/3 of entering students have completed it before starting the program. They don't have us take it until the 3rd semester (next summer) and, while it's still an online course, it's a 12 week course as opposed to 5 weeks. I feel like I'm just not retaining anything and the way the quizzes (which, by the way, feel more like exams) and the discussion questions are worded, it sounds like we need to have more nursing coursework under our belts.

On another note, has everyone received their "blue cards" from the BON? I was fingerprinted back in April and still haven't received anything. I was fingerprinted through the same company for my job and those results came back in a day or two. The head of the nursing program told us there is one (1!) guy that processes all the background checks for all the nursing programs in the state. I don't know if you've ever tried calling the BON but it's an exercise in futility. I'm panicking just a bit! :(

Pharm is a 'different' type of class. It is nor really hard, but a heck of a lot of work. I read every chapter that was cover for our first test and was still stumped on a few questions on the exam. As for the blue card, it took a long time before I received mine. I did however get it in the mail about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I did my fingerprint and whatnots a few days after i got my acceptance letter however. I think Lilag also received her blue card a few days after I did.
