Lonestar College Cyfair ADN Fall 2010

:lol2: Congratulations to everyone who received their acceptance letters for the ADN program at Cyfair for 2010! :lol2:

Can't wait to meet you all! So, what now lol?

Thanks Cschoppe for all of that wonderful info!

And good luck on clinicals! :)

Thank you, cschoppe, for your input.

I have been accepted to both CyFair and Tomball and have really been struggling with the decision about where to enroll. My first choice has always been CyFair because that is the closest campus to me and where I have done my prerequisites. However, I've been worried about the reputation the program has for being unnecessarily tough and not geared toward student support and success. I'm a strong student and expect my nursing program to be hard but I also don't want to be miserable and bullied for the next 2 years. Tomball's program seems to be more student friendly but on the other hand, the word on the street is that the graduates are not prepared. I would so appreciate your advice.

Well,

In response to your post... "a reputation of being unnecessarily tough" is mostly true. Like I said, the program pushes you and a good deal of the learning that you do is self-driven because there is not a whole lot of support from instructors. There are always people who are willing to help and answer questions but the difference is you have to seek them out and ASK yourself...they will not hold your hand, they expect you to be responsible. You can sign up for a nursing buddy and a higher level nursing student will be assigned to you and will be there if you have any concerns or need advice and your first semester of the program they will assign you a mentor which is one of the instructors that will stay with you throughout the entire program. This past semester was tough but not as tough as I was expecting. I studied a lot and spent MANY hours outside of lab practicing my skills in the nursing lab but it wasn't so bad that I thought about quitting or anything like that. I don't know what other programs are like as I never have been to anyone besides this and I'm not going to bash other schools, but from what I do know, is that Cy Fair prepares you to successfully pass your boards and you come out with a reputation of being extremely knowledgable. This program will force you to become your own advocate, because if you don't keep up or do your research you will be lost, and everything is done online so you have to be dilligent about checking Blackboard and whatnot because it's easy to miss something. Always ask your peers, even if it sounds dumb, ask, and check in, they are the ones who will help you through the program.

Thanks again, cschoppe, for your reply. Your input is incredibly helpful!

Thanks, cschoppe! It's really helpful to hear from someone in the program.

There are always people who are willing to help and answer questions but the difference is you have to seek them out and ASK yourself...they will not hold your hand, they expect you to be responsible.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if they were any other way. My first go round in college (general studies at A&M and Blinn), this was how it was. I was shocked at how much hand holding and coddling I've seen in my pre-reqs. As long as they are willing to help when it's needed I don't see it as unfair. Makes me feel better about all of the rumors flying about Cyfair. Thanks again!

I agree, lilag02. I don't expect hand holding but as long as the faculty is reasonable then I can certainly seek out the help when it's needed. Feeling better and better after having heard from a current student. :)

Hi all,

I just posted on the facebook group page. Wondering if anyone wants to meet for coffee or a glass of wine to collaborate or commiserate! :D

I finally got my blue card last week...are we supposed to turn it in or just hang on to it just in case? Thangbom, I saw that you posted on the other thread that you got yours, do you know what we're supposed to do with it by chance?

pcrn- I responded on the FB group, but I don't know if you've seen it. We should definitely get a group together to meet up and chat soon. :)

Hope you all are having a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend!

I think we are to bring the blue card to orientation. I will be bringing a copy of everything in anyways (shot record, birth cert, SS card, DL, student eval, ect.). Just in case they misplace anything because of the break or hectic schedule and overflowing paperwork.

Thanks, Thangbom. That's what I was thinking. They told me to bring proof of my third Hep B shot to orientation, but I'll probably stop by with it when I get it done. I'll take my blue card with me then too, just in case. I'll let y'all know what they say.

I'm starting pharm tomorrow, so here's to six weeks flying by. Anyone else with me?

So, I couldn't help myself and looked up the classes for first semester. Based on what's in the catalog and what's up for the fall course schedule, it looks like our schedule will be-

Monday- 9-11:30 or 12:30-3 (Health Assessment 8/30-12/19)

Tuesday- 9-11:30 or 12:30-3 (Nursing Skills I 8/30-10/22 & Nursing Skills II 10/26-12/19)

Wednesday- 9-11:30 or 12:30-3 (Nursing Skills I 8/30-10/22 & Nursing Skills II 10/26-12/19)

Thursday- 8-12 or 12:30-4:30 (Intro to Nursing 8/30-10/22)

Online- Legal and Ethical Issues for Nurses 10/25-11/21

I really want the a.m. set, but Intro to Nursing is going to have me scrambling. I can't drop my son off at school until 8:25 and he gets out at 3:45, so I have a conflict with a.m. and p.m. Guess I'll be looking into the before and after school program at his school. Man, the costs just rack up don't they?:uhoh3: Thank God for loans...

And just in case people start joining this thread without seeing the other one--I started a Facebook group for our class. It's set as private, so we can plan meetups, study groups, etc. without the entire web being able to see. I don't really expect it to get going until we get closer to orientation, but figured I'd get it started. Here's the link-

Now that the wait for acceptance letters is over, I guess we're on to the wait for July 14th.... Let's hope this one is less stressful.

Ok, I clicked on the link and tried to join but nothing is happening. Any help from you FB people?

As for the Pharm class in Tomball, it seems okay so far. Just very long and tiring class due to the length of the class session. In case you are in the class and don't know who i am, I'm the asian guy sitting right be hide the two Philippine girls, or the guy that rides the motorcycle. Do come and introduce yourself as we will see each other again on July 14th.

So you're the joker? Thank goodness for you! That class is so quiet and needs the lightening up!:D I'm sitting right across from you...dark brown ponytail and black glasses. Are you feeling like it's way easier than it should be? Most of it seems to be common sense to me, but I guess we'll see how I feel after our first exam. Speaking of, I'm glad that she uses NCLEX style questions...lets us get a feel for them before the fall.

Off to re-post the FB group link for ya.

Edited to add: Are you logged in to FB when you click on the link? You can either log in before you click on it, or click on it and it'll take you to the log in page. Once you log in, it should go to the group. Hope that helps, and if not, send me your e-mail addy through PM and I'll send you an invite.
