Lone Star College 2019 LVN to RN transition

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hello to all! I wanted to start this thread specifically for those who were planning on applying to the various Lone Star College transition programs starting in 2019. I have seen and posted in the thread for the traditional ADN applicants, but I think the LVN-RN warrants it's own thread.

So, my plans are to apply to both North Harris and Kingwood campuses. I wanted to apply to Montgomery as well, but won't be able to attend there due to their 5-day a week, heavily loaded Summer semester. Just won't work with my work schedule.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that I have sort of a unique perspective as I was previously enrolled in Kingwood's transition program in 2016, but was forced to leave after the first semester due to an unexpected family emergency. So feel free to ask any questions!

I took the HESI on August 30th and my application score will be 7.71. When I was accepted to Kingwood's program, my app score was 7.74, for any who are wondering.

I know this question is kind of out there but I'm hoping someone who has gone to NH can give me advise! I have a trip already planned and paid to Florida June 23-30 which means I would miss that week of school. Anyone who went to NH know if this will be doable? I do not plan to miss any other days. I know at Montgomery we were not aloud to miss at all.

My mom was there last year and she said you'd have to talk to the teachers, but that the summer is so condensed that it is not a good idea to miss.

The summer session is pretty tight. It looks like those days include a Wednesday and a Thursday. You'd at least be missing a LOT of lecture, and may miss a test or lab practical exam. You basically have to be dead to get permission to make either of those up. They don't really worry attendance per se, as long as you're doing well. But if you're slipping they'll be up your butt if you miss. That's right around the time where we were having lab practicals, and you'll basically have an exam every other Wednesday during the summer.

I would not advise missing that time.

I got in to NH transition, so guess I’ll be seeing everyone on the 27th.

Got into TOMBALL!!! Yay!!!

Lab practicals? Did someone say, lab practicals?

What are those like??? We had nothing like that in the Kingwood transition.

Oh ok, I got you. IVs and foleys and stuff. We didn't really do check offs or testing on that at KW for the transition students. It was more of just hands on reviewing in the lab with the teacher walking around and supervising.

That's basically what we did to get ready for the testing, but then you had to test one-on-one with an instructor. It was a little nerve wracking just bc you had to pass to move on, but it was easy.

And congrats to everyone who got accepted!

Btw, I rented some of my books from Amazon, but I'll post on here at some point with the ones I actually bought so someone who needs them can snag them on the cheap.

Yeah, we did those kinds of skills check offs in LVN school and I absolutely DREADED it. Although I'm a bit of an extrovert, I got really bad stage fright and a lot of anxiety over it.

I can remember when we did the manual BP check off and my nerves were so racked, my pressure was like 140+ and my pulse was over 100. Not a fun experience.

It sucks that they require the transition students to do all of that when that's sort of the reason we are there. We (ideally) already have those skills.
