Lone Star College 2019 LVN to RN transition

Hello to all! I wanted to start this thread specifically for those who were planning on applying to the various Lone Star College transition programs starting in 2019. I have seen and posted in the thread for the traditional ADN applicants, but I think the LVN-RN warrants it's own thread.

So, my plans are to apply to both North Harris and Kingwood campuses. I wanted to apply to Montgomery as well, but won't be able to attend there due to their 5-day a week, heavily loaded Summer semester. Just won't work with my work schedule.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that I have sort of a unique perspective as I was previously enrolled in Kingwood's transition program in 2016, but was forced to leave after the first semester due to an unexpected family emergency. So feel free to ask any questions!

I took the HESI on August 30th and my application score will be 7.71. When I was accepted to Kingwood's program, my app score was 7.74, for any who are wondering.

I too will be applying to their program. Hopefully I get into kingwood seeing as I live in humble. I will also applying to north harris. I had a friend who attended north harris se said although they say 5 days a week 8-4:30 she only attended 2 days a week about 2-4 hours a day and clinicals once a week. I would prefer to do north harris won't be picky, seeing as only made an A in Pharm and the others are B's. I will be taking my HESI next week. I know its late but I also am a full time student and also work 60+ hours a week.

I'll update when I take my hesi and get my scores!!!

Well congrats, Anyce!

I completed the first semester in Kingwood's program, and currently have a cousin in North Harris' basic track program, as well as an ex who did the transition there, so I have had a good bit of exposure to them both. You are correct on your scheduling, both campuses class days are twice a week and only 2-3 hours in length with clinicals one day a week. Kingwood is the exception, as they go up to 2x/wk clinicals during their final semester.

From what I have seen, heard, read and experienced, my preference is NH by a long shot.

Hello, I will be applying to NH, M, and T.

I have 2 A's and one B.

My HESI score was 87% and my critical thinking was 980.

I believe my score is 7.08.

This will be my second time applying. I had a 6.36 last year so hopefully fingers crossed.

Hello and welcome! Congrats on bringing your score up so much. Looking forward to getting the application ball rolling. Applications open up January 7th!

Hey I was just wondering if you know what the schedule is for the summer semester? Some say it’s four days a week others say it’s five but does it vary per campus? Also does anyone know how the Kingwood schedule is? Is Kingwood the hardest one to get into?

My cousin is currently in the basic track ADN at North Harris and she got info from one of the transition students in her cohort. I don't have the exact details in front of me right now, but if I remember correctly it's 2 days of class and 1 day of clinical per week for the entire program, including the Summer.

And yes it does vary by campus. North Harris has their schedule that runs the entire Summer session. Montgomery on the other hand does 5 days a week during the Summer, but its only 6 weeks long and then you get a break before starting the Fall. Then Kingwood, who starts in the Fall, has their Summer semester at the end of the program that is 2 days a week class, and 2 days a week clinical. The rest of the year at Kingwood is 2 days of class and 1 day a week of clinical. They also go to class in the evening. I was there from around 5:30-7:30 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays, and your clinical day was either Thursday, Friday or Saturday. At the beginning of the semester you give them a ranking of your 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices for clinical days and they try to give you the day you want. For instance, some LVNs work M-F at clinics or family practices and could only have clinicals on Saturdays. Your clinical day will then be the same for the entire semester, it does not change week to week.

As far as difficulty getting in, it varies. From my experience, Montgomery has typically had the higher cutoff for acceptance in recent years. I'm not too familiar with the Cy-Fair and Tomball campuses. I recall a couple years ago, the lowest score for their transition cohort was around a 7.5, which is very high. Our cutoff at Kingwood in 2016 was around 6.9 or 7 I think. I got in with a 7.74 and only talked to 2 or 3 other students with a higher application score.

Hello Everyone,

I applied to the LVN to RN Transition program for the Tomball location. I'm getting nervous now that I've read this thread. I am applying with a score of 7.064/8. Yikes! Does anyone know the Tomball schedule? Has anyone attended the Tomball program?

Hello, Janie! And welcome! Don't feel bad about getting nervous. Everyone gets some nerves around application season. Your score is still competitive so don't get yourself discouraged. I'm not very familiar with Tomball as it is still relatively new, but I have heard some positive things, especially about their simulation labs being top notch.

Is there any particular reason you are only applying to Tomball? I applied to Tomball as well, but as my 2nd choice to North Harris. Even though that campus is over an hour away from me.

Also don't forget, there is the Kingwood campus whose application opens up in March!

Hi Casey!

Thanks for the response. I only applied to the Tomball location because Tomball alone is a pretty good commute for me. North Harris and Montegomery are even further. I may regret that decision of I don't get into Tomball but positive thought and vibes only! hehe!

Hello all I’m also applying to the transition program. Took HESI Today my score is 7.06/8. I’m hoping that’s good enough to get in.

Hey everyone. I made an account just to comment on this thread.

I am currently in my last semester of the transition program at North Harris. As stated, classes are usually Wed and Thurs, 11-1:30 for N1-N4 semesters. For the Summer session for transition students, the hours fluctuated a lot, but were generally close to that. That said, plan on being there M-F 8-5 for the first 2 weeks of the summer session, and keep M-F clear for the first 2 weeks of each semester. They COULD get everything done during the regular Wed/Thurs, but they like to throw in things like clinical site orientations, calendar reviews, etc. It will drive you crazy if you're not ready for it. If you're like me, you've moved heaven and Earth to get your schedule set up around your clinical day and the classroom schedule, so those first 2 weeks each semester can be a pain. Tests are held on Wed mornings at 8. If you get below a 75, you will be required to attend a remediation session. This is usually the Wed morning the next week.

Like most college programs/courses, you can get MUCH better deals on the books if you hunt around, rent books from online sources, etc. However, there are a LOT of books, and hunting down deals on each one individually is a pain. So, if you're paying with financial aid or aren't tight for money, go ahead and buy the bundle from the bookstore for sake of ease.

START GETTING YOUR TITERS AND VACCINES DONE NOW. Check with someone from the school for a full list. It's a long list; and if your titers are negative for something like HepB, getting the immunizations done properly can take months.

The school suggests that you don't work or work part time while attending. I'm 34 with a house and a family, so for me (and many of my classmates) that's just not an option. If that is an option for you, work as little as you can.

Don't be intimidated by what I'm about to say, because if you can get into the program, you can get THROUGH the program, but...

I am a paramedic with 12 years of experience on the ambulance, and 15 years total patient care experience, and this program has humbled me academically. The tests are no joke. I've maintained a low B average in lecture, but I'm definitely not used to that. Study often, study together, don't procrastinate, and find/use every youtube channel and pathophysiology-one-sheet from Pinterest that you can. Ask the paramedics and LVNs for help with skills. Don't be freaked out by the SIM days because it's just practice for your actual clinicals.

Ask me any other questions you have and I'd be happy to answer!
