I never heard that before. Like any parts of town there are nice sections and then not so nice sections in West Chester. I would consider it a very nice area. I live just outside of West Chester now but was a student there many years ago. I lived off campus and I could walk to anything. The town has only improved from what I can see. I am in the town all the time. Take a stroll up town a ten minute walk from the university and you have Iron Hill Brewery and many new restaurants. I posted a few West Chester links for you. The wcdish.com website link that I gave you below just had a dine around town event that my sister and I went to. It was really nice and only cost $25 to go to nice restaurants and sample some of their fine food.
My suggestion for you would be to go out with some of your friends and see for yourself. Go out to dinner in West Chester and walk around the town. West Chester has a great restaurant festival every year in September. This Sunday is "Super Sunday" in downtown West Chester. Check it out for yourself.

if you have not visited area, it is very nice not rowdy as some college towns can be. most people commute to this school and it has large residential area with families.

do you think i will feel out of place being 28 years old? is it a total college town where everyone is 21 and under? i'm looking at other programs like villanova and drexel which i think are closer to the city. since i'm going to be 28 when i start, i would rather be in an area with people who are closer to my age...if that makes any sense...i just didn't want to end up in some small town with all 18 year old college kids.
thanks for in the input,

West Chester as a town is just fine...I grew up there...
As with any town there are crap neighborhoods...
I think that your friend was thinking of the area east of the University...
but other areas are just fine...like to the west of the campus...
and downtown is the same...
..overall it's a good college town..
West Chester isn't just college aged kids....
Check it out...
Villanova is a very expensive area and Drexel is in the city...
I recommend West Chester as far as a town goes...
