Loan forgiveness options? Help!

Published

Hi! I am a registered nurse currently working in a NICU in Arkansas. My husband and I are moving to Seattle, Wa in August and finishing BSN school in July. I have over $60,000 in student loans and am trying desperately to find a program that offers loan repayment. I have looked into the HRSA nurse corps repayment as an option, but have been told that since the funding has been cut that they were only able to award like three people last year out of thousands of applicants. My husband thinks at this point I should join the army (lol) and work out a deal with them which I am almost considering! I am planning to do the 10 year government loan forgiveness program, but even doing that my payment will still be $800. I don't see how we can afford to start a family with payments so high. Any ideas for loan repayment plans or contracts at hospitals in the Seattle area or programs in general are appreciated! Thanks.

Excuse me OP, I know you are new to this board, but calling people "trolls" is against TOS. (terms of service, which you agreed to abide when you signed up here). Not one poster here is a "troll" even as it's defined in cyberspace. I see a lot of helpful posts, no doubt some more so than others.

Good luck------ and maybe next time you post a question on a public forum, you will understand that a variety of answers will be posted, and you can always discard what you don't like or cannot use.

But you don't get to call other members "trolls" on this forum simply because you don't like the advice you asked for in the first place.

Best wishes.

What a refreshingly friendly comment! Thanks so much, we are excited for the move and new nursing opportunities. I will look into the Bellvue area, I'm sure it wouldn't be too expensive to live a few minutes outside of town and commute for cheaper housing. ☺️

There is a quote button to clarify who you are responding to.

If you are as sure about Seattle housing and commuting costs as you are about loan repayment you are sure to be caught unawares again.

Nobody moves to Seattle for the commute.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm not sure that it's necessarily that these trolls arent from arkansas, I think they are just rude haha. They obviously don't have out of control loan payments! My husband and I are hardworking and both work overtime regularly. I'm not sure what is giving people the impression that I am "not helping myself" or that I don't work. I have already applied and spoken with someone with the public service loan forgiveness, and my payments each month for the 10 year (or 120 payment) period are still crazy! It will save me a ton of money in the long run though, I am just looking for a way to get my monthly payment down some. Thanks again.

Look who was just calling everyone rude and is now being the rude one here.

This is absolutely ridiculous. We all had loans or tuition to pay. Some of us HAVE huge loan payments and we do our best to pay it and not ask for loan forgiveness.

I am paying (out of pocket) for my RN degree currently. I have 35k in student loans I am also paying off and have a husband who doesn't have the best paying job and 4 kids and one on the way. I chose to talk with my loan company and make a payment plan that works better for us now. When I get my tax refunds (if I get any) all that will be going to my loans to help pay it off faster and lower the monthly bill. I budget, I make sacrifices, I pick up extra shifts.. It's life.

I'm one of those people that prefers to help people who try to help themselves. From what little you have told me you seem to be making your problem worse and aren't seriously asking for help.

Moving is expensive, Seattle is VERY expensive compared to Arkansas, you do not appear to have a job, and you are thinking about starting a family. I'm not sure what your thought process was but throwing your hands up on a public forum with a Help! does shriek of desperation.

You clearly haven't read my whole post, normally I wouldn't respond to someone who chose not to read the entire question, I WILL say that:

1. I DO work as a NICU Nurse.

2.I'm aware that Seattle is expensive.

3. I am not an idiot, contrary to what you seem to believe.

What I AM asking is for something that you clearly can not help me with. Why did you answer this question? Oh wait you didn't, you just offered your extremely unhelpful opinion instead.

I hope that you have more satisfaction in your real life than you portray here, on this forum.

Hello Roser13, What an honor to "hear" from you. I don't believe you took the time to actually read my post. What you did post was not appropriate to the question I asked. If you have an actual suggestion that could help me, then feel free to rephrase your comment.

1. I'm sorry that you don't know that there are resources available to help you lower your payments/lower your overall loan repayment; resources that I am already utilizing.

2. I'm sorry that you chose to have 4 children with one on the way and aren't pursing any resources for loan forgiveness.

3. I choose to make my loan repayments as they are now while also pursuing options for loan repayment/forgiveness.

4. If you read my original post, you'd see that my husband and I BOTH work full time and also both pick up extra shifts regularly, while we don't have kids. I hear it's much easier to do without a house full of children. Birth control is a life saver.

While I am generally opposed to people trying to get out of their obligations - I did find this fact sheet with regard to federal student loans which are different than student loans from private banks.

I asked for loan repayment options that exist in the Seattle area, not for someone to tell me that the funds I borrowed were expected to be repaid, and the difference between federal and private bank loans. If you read my original post, you'd know that I expect to repay them. I was just hoping to utilize a loan repayment plan/organization in order to lower them. If one does not exist, that's fine, at least I tried. Except that they do exist, and I have mentioned at least one already, and why that one does not work for me. If you have an actual suggestion for reducing my student loan amount or a suggestion for a hospital who offers contracts in exchange for loan payment, please comment. If not, you are not being helpful. I already make over the minimum payments and am just trying to plan ahead.

I know you did not just talk about my choice in having children when you want me (the tax payer) to pay your student loans.

You have 0 room to talk about anyone in these situations. I used my resources. YOU are not. You want us to pay for your college.

I already said I used my resources by talking to my loan company and getting in a plan that I can work with. Reading comprehension. I think that's what's lacking here. You're so busy being so pissed off nobody wants to pay your loans you're not reading our replies.

Thanks so much for the comment, but I have researched the cost of living for the Seattle area, and wouldn't you know, right outside of Seattle the cost of living is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than in Seattle itself (links included below). These refer mostly to the cost of living in general, however, we have also looked into the cost for commute. Our cost to commute from right outside Seattle is also significantly lower than our cost for housing in Seattle. Can't wait to visit the troll, are you always there?

If you took out a loan hoping that someone down the way was going to forgive or pay off that loan for you then you were being dishonest and disingenuous.

I'm sorry,

Is it ok now to assume that people are dishonest and disingenuous for seeking out loan forgiveness/loan repayment options available to them? If so, please set me straight. Otherwise, do not comment. I asked for student loan repayment/forgiveness options available to me. The most anyone has offered so far on this forum has been to live frugally (which I already do) or to work on a reservation (which I plan to look into).

I think you should just stop while you're behind. You're fighting a losing fight. You're making low blows at people who do not agree with you. Calling people names. You're just being mean because the responses weren't what you wanted.

This is very poor "nurse" behavior.
