The joys of living under the thumb of NYC/NYS over-governance just never end.
Many online nurse practitioner programs not located in NYS no longer accept applications from nys residents because the NYS Bd of ED has recently decided it must approve any out of state programs offering MSN leading to NP certification.
There are some fine, affordable online FNP programs out there, but NYS BoE figures the money should stay in-state I guess.
Does anyone have a link to a list of online out-of-state programs blessed by NYS?
Hello roseonye, I know this post was back in Jan 19, 2014 but maybe this info below will be of some assistance to you.
I know that this is an old post but I hope this information helps. I am a Native New Yorker but I know reside in Texas. I still keep up with both my New York & Texas RN License. I have successfully completed my FNP through an online university and now I have passed The National Certification Exam through AANP Boards. Here is a link that was up dated this past July, 2014. Its a lists all the schools including online schools that the State of New York will accept.

They have added quit a bit more since 2011. Hope this helps.
Hey Bronze:
Are all of the schools on the list approved online schools for New York State because I do not see where it says New York Approved on the list?
That list is a little confusing. Is Walden and Chamberlain accepted in New York state for NP? I see the comments in red but some of them say only until 2014/2015? I wonder 'why" New York is like this when it comes to NP? I wonder who you could write to in New York to find out about this and "why"
Basically if you live in NY, you can not attend an online school. The State of NY WILL NOT ACCEPT it and you will not be able to get approved for clinical Practicum hours. I think NY at present only accepts Frontier & one other online school.......Not sure which other one.
However if you live OUTSIDE of NY and went to an on-line school, completed a course in Pharmacology as a part of your FNP, then you can apply for a NY APRN State license through National Certification once you have passed boards or either ANCC or AANP.
Once the state of NY has received all of your material for licensure, you then have to take a "Prescriptive Writing" course (can be completed On-line for about $25) and upon completing the course, complete application packet & National Board Certification, then you will be issued a NY State License as an Advance Nurse Practitioner. I live in TX and graduated from an On-Line program for FNP and I have just completed the tasks required for obtaining a NY State APRN-FNP License!!!
