Licensure question for relocating new grad

U.S.A. New York

Published

I will be graduating from LSU School of Nursing (New Orleans, LA) in May. I plan to move to NYC next summer. My question is: Should I take the NCLEX in Louisiana and apply for a Louisiana license first? Or should I apply for my NY license first? Can I take the NCLEX in Louisiana and still obtain my NY license? Any help would be greatly appreciated :p

Where will you be working first? You can't work as a Graduate Nurse without a permit and an application to take the boards. So I'd say get licensed where you think you're going to be working first. Good Luck!

I realize this is an older post (from 1/2006), but I was hoping that someone could clarify something.

Does this mean that I would have to secure a position before I can take the test?

NCLEX exam only requires that you have approval from a State Board of Nursing to sit for it. It does not require a job or job offer to be able to take it.

The exam is a national exam, and the score is good for every state in the country to work in. You will still need to apply for licensure in the state where you wish to work, but once you take and pass the exam, you never take it again. You would then apply for Licensure by Endorsement to the other state or states that you wished to get licensed in.
