  1. I graduated from LSU in the CARE program last May in the first graduating CARE class. I'm not going to lie. The curriculum and the pace in which you go through it is very intense, but you can do it! Since I was in the first class, things were pretty disorganized and chaotic, but I know things are better now. I feel that I was prepared to start my career as a nurse, and the faculty is fabulousand extremely knowledgeable and helpful. You'll be in lectures sometimes for 8 hours a day and clinicals for 12 hours, but that will prepare you for life as a real nurse. Some days you will question why you're putting yourself through this hell, but by the time graduation comes, you'll be saying "It really wasn't that bad." Good luck, and just keep telling yourself that lots of people have succeeded in this program!!
  2. Hey kimaboogie, I really love the 10th floor so far. I've been off of orientation for almost 3 months, and it can be intimidating at times, but I always feel challenged. The staff is great, and everyone helps each other so much, which is so important to me. I haven't gone to nights yet, but I should be going within a few months. Are you working in the ED? It's so crazy down there. I had kidney stones a few weeks ago and ended up at the ER for 8 long hours. Hope you're enjoying your new job :)
  3. I took the test last week. I made 100 on the calculations part and an 88 on the drug part. If you follow the study guide, you'll do fine. Don't stress too much!!
  4. Kimaboogie, Did you get the job in the ED? If so, I think I was offered your position on the oncology unit? I got the call last Wed. I'm very excited. Is there anything you can tell me about the oncology unit? When I went for the interview, I loved it. It seems like a great place to work.
  5. I will be graduating from LSU School of Nursing (New Orleans, LA) in May. I plan to move to NYC next summer. My question is: Should I take the NCLEX in Louisiana and apply for a Louisiana license first? Or should I apply for my NY license first? Can I take the NCLEX in Louisiana and still obtain my NY license? Any help would be greatly appreciated
  6. Hey Tinderbox, I will be graduating in May, and I plan to move to NYC next summer. I am applying to Mt. Sinai, NYU, Lenox Hill, NYP, and Sloan Kettering as of right now. I thought about doing travel nursing, but I really just want to get out of New Orleans now. I don't want to wait 2 years. NYU has a nursing residency program for new grads. I'm not too sure about the orientation programs at the other hospitals. Good luck!
  7. Thanks for all of your help, Kahlo. I will definitely look into these other hospitals.
  8. Hi everyone! I am a nursing student from New Orleans who will be graduating with a BSN in May. Since the healthcare system in New Orleans has drastically deteriorated because of Hurricane Katrina, I am thinking about looking for jobs in NYC or surrounding areas. I love New York, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to live and work in a new place. I understand that NYU Medical Center offers a nursing residency program for new grads. Does anyone know if this is only for grads from NYU School of Nursing? Any recommendations on hospitals in the city that are good to their employees? Is it a long process to get a NY nursing license? I know..I have a lot of questions, but I would really appreciate any info you may have! Thanks. Amber :)
