License/ Exam

Published

Hi everyone! So Im from NJ and graduated from a PN program in 2009 (also in NJ), I did not sit for my boards or even apply for a license. Life happened, I look up and 8 years has gone by. Is it too late to sit for my boards? Would I have to go back to school?

Thank you!

You need to contact the board of nursing directly. Be prepared to be told to repeat school

Hi - Each state has it's own policy regarding the number of years between graduation and taking the NCLEX. Some states require you to take a nurse refresher course. I used to teach one where the theory was online and lab/clinical were at the school. Since it was self-paced, students could complete the course within as little as 4 weeks or take their time up to one year. Some states give students the option to go ahead and take the NCLEX and then if they do not pass, they are required to take a refresher course. If you call your state's board of nursing, you can find out directly what is necessary for your state. If you need help, I have worked with many students to figure out what requirements they need to meet and also to help them pass their boards. Good Luck and I applaud you for coming back to take boards and continue towards your journey of becoming a nurse after a few years away!!
