  1. HI - If you are still only getting between 50 to 55% of questions correct, I would encourage you to wait. Try something you haven't tried before. Make certain you are READY before re-testing! I find that too many students get in a hurry to take their boards again after failing once instead of taking the time necessary to find out what caused the failure in the first place. I have worked with hundreds of students who have failed their boards multiple times and have been able to help them pass on their first attempt after teaching them a simple set of test taking strategies.
  2. Hi - Each state has it's own policy regarding the number of years between graduation and taking the NCLEX. Some states require you to take a nurse refresher course. I used to teach one where the theory was online and lab/clinical were at the school. Since it was self-paced, students could complete the course within as little as 4 weeks or take their time up to one year. Some states give students the option to go ahead and take the NCLEX and then if they do not pass, they are required to take a refresher course. If you call your state's board of nursing, you can find out directly what is necessary for your state. If you need help, I have worked with many students to figure out what requirements they need to meet and also to help them pass their boards. Good Luck and I applaud you for coming back to take boards and continue towards your journey of becoming a nurse after a few years away!!
  3. Truly sorry for your loss and the loss of that nursing students family! We lost a nursing student this past year to cancer. They were diagnosed when the program was almost over, had had zero symptoms prior but only lived 5 months after the diagnosis. It is really sad to know they didn't get to see their dream come to fruition. Prayers!!
  4. Test taking anxiety can cause a student to not think clearly and either not perform as well or fail the test altogether. I teach NCLEX review and test taking strategies to nursing students. From my experience, test taking anxiety is the number one reason nursing students do not pass boards. I don't know the age of your students with the state testing, but I think teaching some simple techniques ahead of time to reduce test taking anxiety (for all tests, not just the state test) can help your students perform better.
