Are these med-surg positions that were offered to you?
.
I would weigh the fact that going into a specialty may lock you into that specialty for some time. If you do med-surg, then you'll have more career options.

I know Lenox Hill has a Union--what about Bellevue? There are pros and cons in general re: having a Union, but helps to speak with nurses already working there to see if the Union issue is a positive or negative at that particular hospital...Any workers out there who can inform us??? I believe the only Magnet hospitals in Manhattan are NYU and Mt. Sinai....Thanks..
I just got two job offers from Lenox and Bellevue hospital as a new graduate. I am having hard time to decide. Does anybody know which hospital is better for nurses to work with, benefits, reputation and for my future career?
Bellevue also has a union. It may be NYSNA. Lenox Hill has an independent union that the nurses there formed 20 years ago. It is NOT affiliated with NYSNA or SEIU.
I spoke to a former Lenox Hill nurse who was hired there as a new grad two years ago. She felt her orientation and her preceptorship were too short. She got burned out and went elsewhere.

I think the name of the union is NYPNU. I was looking at their website, specifically their recent news, and I find myself hesitant with Lenox Hill. The nurses there seem to be stretched pretty thin, just from what I have read.

I used to volunteer at Lenox Hill when I was in High school. It is a great hospital from what I heard then.
Yes, Lenox Hill has a great reputation if you are a patient considering treatment/surgery, but I think 7 weeks is a bit short for a formal orientation/preceptorship...The pay w/night differential is the same--or less--than other big, prestigious NYC hospitals (except that you must pay Union dues at Lenox Hill--$1,000+/year???) You implied that Lenox Hill and NYP-Cornell are Magnet-Status Hospitals...I'm fairly sure that is not true...The Magnets in Manhattan are NYU, Mt Sinai, and your new home--Hospital for Special Surgery ("HSS")....I considered HSS, but felt that its orthopedics focus was a bit too narrow for what I needed as a new grad..Now, perhaps there are benefits to having the Union as you suggest: Better insurance coverage. And what about overtime: if a Nurse needs to stay an extra hour after a 12-hour shift to finish (which is a likely scenario for a fresh grad), perhaps the Union makes sure she gets paid for that hour, where non-Union hospitals may take the attitude, "Well, it's your fault you didn't finish, so you're on your own time..." Good luck at HSS and let us know how the training is :)
i just turned down a job from lenox hill....HOWEVER - I was sad to turn it down....lenox hill is one of the best in the city and has a great reputation. They also have amazing benefits, and with a BSN working nights as a new grad you make about 70,500 a year with a ton of benefits. apparantly with a union, you get very low co-pay with medical, tons of PTO time including a guaranteed 2 weeks during the summer etc. they are a grassroots union - something very important to consider.there are other magnet's in NYC. I will be working for hospital for special surgery in september at the PACU. They specialize in a 6 month residency program for new grads in critical care. the other magnet is NYP-Cornell. good luck in your search!!! lenox hill is a very respectable hospital.

Recently I stopped into NY-P and saw magnet signs hanging everywhere! I wonder if they are "going in" for it, or possibly newly accredited?
