Lenox hospital vs. Bellevue hospital

Hi Gracie, I'm still interviewing--looking to start in Sept....looking at Sloan-Kettering, possible NYU tho' I've heard mixed things about NYU...was a little put off by Mount Sinai--their website tells you to apply by e-mail--so I send them a "cover letter" e-mail w/a Word-doc resume attached and I get a response telling me to apply on the website ?! You should get GREAT training at HSS--very well-regarded program. Re: Magnets: I think Columbia-Presby is/has applied, but nothing official yet as to whether they received it.

nyforlove ---

I did not mean to imply lenox hill was magnet...by any means:) Recently on a visit to HSS I stopped into NY-P and saw magnet signs hanging everywhere!!! I wonder if they are "going in" for it, or possibly newly accredited?? Mabye I'm just going crazy.

I agree with you on HSS's narrow scope of practice. However, their training for the PACU is extensive and thorough, which was my number one priority as a new grad. I will spend two months in a classroom before even hitting the floor to be trained in critical care. Everyone goes by first name at HSS. It is really a great place and I am excited to begin (i know i am biased!). Are you looking for work or have you started anywhere yet?

Yes I agree with you on Mt. Sinai -- the application proccess is tedious and if you call HR, they tell you to submit an application to specific jobs listed in the website. If I am not mistaken, they hire new grads as they go on availablitiy basis rather than "a batch" to start in september, etc. I have also heard mixed about NYU but they do hire NG's into specialty units.

Let's keep in touch as the fall approaches---perhaps we can organize a happy-hour for new grads at Upper East Side Hospitals to trade war stories:rolleyes:

I was also offered a job at SKM....they offered med-surg units and pediatrics...and also begin in september. A lot of my friends from school work there. good luck on your search:)

Gracie,

How long were you at HSS? I'm in my first year of ICU and will hopefully get my CCRN prior to completing a year and moving onto another state (I can't take the heat anymore!!!).

I'm worried I may not be able to get into an ICU, so I appreciate any and all feedback about hospitals and their ICU programs.

Thanks!

nyforlove.....sounds great! i always wondered if there was really such thing as 8am happy hours for nurses coming off shift....haha.

cookie -- you would love NYC. I hear that NYU offers a lot of specialty units to new grads, but you would be at a special advantage especially with CCRN.

I'd want to be core staff and then maybe work 1-2 days a week per diem somewhere. Does agency pay the same as hospital per diem? I bought a dvd from Dr. Gasparis Vonfrolio and she mentioned a law passed that capped what agencies can charge.

I appreciate the offer. I'm sure I'll be bugging you for your insights :)
