Late career choice @ 35

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone. I am new here and so far I really enjoy the information and experiences that everyone is sharing.

I just turned 35 years old in Jan and after years of not knowing what I wanted after I left the Navy, I have finally chosen the one career that my Great-Grand mother told me that I was going to be. Matter of fact every since I was a little girl she would always ask me, "So, you are going to be a nurse like Florence Nightingale, right?". And I would always tell her that I would.

So far, I have really liked what I've learned and have even passed my A&P I with an A. I have always liked feeling like I am making a difference in people's lives and I want to help people get better physically as well as emotionally and spiritually.

Are there any other 30 something year old people out there that have just now chosen nursing as their career and do you ever feel like sometimes you may be too late in choosing although you know there is no way that you want to stop now? (Sometimes I feel that way)

I am turning 35 in july and just finished getting my C.N.A. course and starting my pre-reqs in May so you are not alone.I had the doubts about starting out so old and being a male but relized i am old enough to really commit to this more than i would have at a younger age.:)

I am almost 39 and am in my second semester of prereques. I was not the oldest in my Anatomy class last semester, but I am definitely the oldest in my Micro class! I have one more semester before I can apply for nursing school. Depending on how long it takes me to get in (they do it on a point system here), I may be 40 or 41 before beginning nursing school.

It is never too late!

You're never too old to go back to school! I'll be 40 this December, and will start nursing school in the fall!

Specializes in None.

I am 35 and I have been accepted to UMSL's Fall 10 BSN program. I will turn 36yo 20 days before my nursing program starts. I have actually always known that I wanted to be a nurse, I attended community college for 1 year before entering the Air Force. Let's just say that at 18 partying was more important than school. After growing up a bit more @ age 27 I decided that I was mature enough to go for it once again and here I am almost nine years later I can see my dream starting to manifest itself in reality. I firmly believe that you are never to old to pursue any dream, career, goal, or path. If you are young enough to dream it and reach for it, then you are young enough to achieve it.

I was accepted for this fall, and I'll turn 35 a week after starting! There are definitely lots of us out there!

I feel great knowing that I am not the only one, you know? You guys are like a support group! :D

I am glad that you realized that your maturity would carry you through at this time.

No, it is never too late to do what you were meant to do.

Best of luck to you with your classes!

Hey there fellow previous military comrad!

I am prior Navy and I was more into partying at 18 than school also. ;)

I guess since there is nothing new under the sun, we were all given our ages in which we would pursue our dreams. Some younger than others. But the important thing is that we start, stick to, and complete the program, right? :)

I am 38 and I am working on my pre-reqs right now. I am currently taking micro. I already have a degree in Math, so I am looking into a 2nd degree accelerated program. Good luck!

I am 42 and planning to apply to the nursing program in August.

I think I will make a better nurse now than I would've 20 years ago!

It's never too late for your dream!

best of luck
