  1. I have had great luck with buying my books at Amazon or Half.com and then selling them back to my college bookstore. As a previous poster stated, it does take some time to hunt the good deals down, but it has been worth it for me. My best deal yet was the new Micro book I purchased at Amazon for $100 with free shipping and I sold it back to my college bookstore for $94. Miz Que
  2. I also took my nutrition class online and while the content was easy, it was a very time-consuming class due to all the busy work and paper we had to write. Miz Que
  3. It's interesting to me that you are required to volunteer for one year as a minimum. What are they going to do if you leave before that year is up? Miz Que
  4. There is an alternate entry MSN in my area for people with a BS, but I cannot go that route because it spans over 3 summers. I have 2 kids and my hubby would not be able to watch them while I am in school full time in the summer for 3 summers. If they had the program as strictly a Fall/Spring semester, I could go this route since I would prefer to go for my Masters. So, now I am going to do the ADN and hope I can get a job when I graduate! Otherwise, I'll be back in school to do a bridge to the BSN. Miz Que
  5. If that is what you want to do, I say go for it! I have 2 bachelor degrees and I am currently going for an Associates degree right now. I don't think it matters what level of degree you get, as long as it is something you are interested in. Miz Que
  6. In our micro we used non-virulent strains of the microbes, so that made me feel better about it. I still sanitized my hands after every lab, though! Miz Que
  7. This past semester I took Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Human Growth and Development. I made an A in all three. I felt that Micro was the most difficult material to understand, but I spent more time on Pharmacology due to the sheer volume of it. As previous posters, I also found it beneficial to make flashcards for the meds. I did mine different than most people, but it helped me memorize the info as chunks. Instead of writing the specific med on one side of the card and all the info about it on the other side, I wrote the drug class on one side of the card and wrote all the meds that belonged in that class on the other side. I also included the mechanism of action (MOA) because my professor always asked about that. He typically did not mention side effects on specific drugs, but mentioned them as a class, so I would include that info after the MOA. This method alleviated having to re-write the same info for 5 to 10 drugs that fell in the same class, with the same side effects. Also, instead of memorizing specific drug names, I remembered them as a group when possible. For example, many ACE inhibitors end in "pril" (ex: enalapril), so when time was short, I would remember that instead of each drug that ended in "pril". This did not always work, but was helpful for many classes of drugs (many beta blockers end in "olol", the HMG-CoA drugs end in "statin", etc). Miz Que
  8. My mom has a similar problem, so I never wear perfume anymore. I am surprised you got yelled at for requesting that the transport worker not wear perfume. There are soooooo many people that have reactions to perfume that I cannot believe people will not respect your request. I have no ideas on how to help you with this problem. I just consider it common courtesy for people to do their best to comply with a request that is in the interest of health. I am so sorry you have to deal with this! Perhaps you can get a doctor's note documenting your allergy to show management? Miz Que
  9. I am almost 39 and am in my second semester of prereques. I was not the oldest in my Anatomy class last semester, but I am definitely the oldest in my Micro class! I have one more semester before I can apply for nursing school. Depending on how long it takes me to get in (they do it on a point system here), I may be 40 or 41 before beginning nursing school. It is never too late! Miz Que
  10. Depending on the state the babysitter was in, this is not necessarily illegal. In my state, there are no laws governing at what age a child can be left alone. Personally, I would never leave an eight year old home alone. Miz Que
  11. Stop buying cleaning products. I have been cleaning with vinegar, water, baking soda and tea tree oil for over a year. It saves a ton of money and I don't get a headache anymore when I clean. Word of caution: please do some research online first. Some products cannot be combined (like bleach and vinegar) and you must be aware of this at all times. I accidentally did this when I used a dried rag in my vinegar and water solution that apparently had been used with bleach and not washed. I almost passed out before I realized what was going on. Deborah
  12. Hi Allison, Thank you for your reply! I have my final review and edit to do, but it is currently 1 page single spaced. It sounds like mine is about the same length as yours. I am going to to info session tonight, so I will probably talk to them about it. One more question: do you find the program to be pretty intensive? Do you eat, sleep, and drink nursing school or do you find you have time to breathe? Deborah
  13. In my anatomy class last semester, a lot of students brought their digital cameras to snap shots of the models. I never did this, but definitely was the odd one out. To the OP, do you have access to the computer? I did a ton of googling for charts and diagrams! Miz Que
  14. Congratulations!! That is a difficult habit to kick. I bet you find you will lose weight. Asparatame is an appetite stimulant. I went from 6 Diet Cokes a day many years ago, to 3 full sugar Cokes a day. Now, I drink 1/2 of the small 8oz cans about once every two weeks or so. I find that when I drink them, i feel *terrible*!! Don't ask me why I continue. I guess sometimes I just want a few sips for the delicious taste. Miz Que
  15. Looks pretty good. I agree that it is a bit choppy. I would change: 1) The first sentence could read- As an RN with a BSN, I would love the opportunity... 2) The third and fourth sentences could be combined and read - Having working on a Women's floor caring for maternity and female surgical patients, I have a passion for women's health and maternity nursing. 3) the word "very" is in the cover letter twice and is a bit vague as an adjective. I would find 2 separate adjectives that better describe the feeling you are trying to portray. Good luck on getting the interview! Miz Que
