Today is my official last day of civilian work, well hopefully my ANC career becomes a 20+ year adventure. My office gave me a going away celebration last week, today I will say goodbye. I am really excited, a little sad and lots anxious. I am 17 days away from BOLC and getting nervous about my physical abilty, the need to loose some more weight and etc....

I'm sooooo jealous of you!

You will do great! Use that nervous energy and channel it into what you need to do.

You are in the same boat with the rest of us. I am 5 lbs. away from not having to be taped, but I am starting to look sickly. I don't understand the Army standards. Everyone keeps asking me if I am okay, because the weight loss is so extreme. Last night I was able to run a mile without stopping so tonight I will push to run 1.5 miles without stopping. My goal is to get to being able to run 2 miles without stopping, and then working on speed. So far I complete a mile in 9:45, which I know is extremely slow, but I just started running last week. What are you doing to train? I am really nervous about the physical aspect. I am a long way from fit 18 year old days, that's for sure.

Congrats, Hopeful! I am so excited for you!! :) Can't wait until I can post the same.

Yeah, even at 4'11", I don't look right if I'm under the "tape" goal, which is something like 125 lbs. Yikes. Whenever my weight has been any less than that, people ask me if I'm okay. LOL. I have quite a bit of muscle, so I should weigh more. I figure if I end up having to be taped, I'll be fine with that.

If you're looking for a running training program, I'll re-pimp the program I did: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml -- it really eased me into being a runner in a way that I didn't hate it! As a matter of fact, I love running now. I'm running about 2.5 miles in 30 minutes, and that's only 10 weeks after starting the Couch-to-5K. And I was NOT a runner at all! With these short legs, are you kidding? So now I'm working on increasing my speed and decreasing my time to 2 miles. I have about a year to train, so I figure I'll be ahead of the curve.

Well I am more than 5lbs away, I know I will have to be taped. I am a little under 5'2", the standards are really tuff. I am 35 and having a hard time loosing weight.

As far as run time, I started running a few months back, recently I started running with a weighted vest. The vest is making a difference so when I run without it, I am stronger and faster but I still need to shave off an other 2-3 minutes consistently. Your 9:45 mile sounds good to me!

The push ups seem to be giving me a hard time, I am weaker and heavier than ever- not a good combination for pushups! I am going to use free weights and train to get upper body stronger.

Now that I am done with work, my new full time job is working out and packing!

I agree with you on the taping. It's great to have msucle except when it comes to the scale! Its even harder when you have muscle and little height:). If you look at a good majority of military people, you can assume lots of them have to be taped. My recruiter says he has been taped pretty much his whole 18 year career.

I am familiar with cool runnings, I used it in the past. I think it is an awesome program for anyone who has atleast a few months before leaving for BOLC. I would recommend it along with the weighted vest and sprints.

Hey Hopeful, CONGRATS on your upcoming training. I will be in the July class. If I remember correctly, you are going to Ft. Stewart? How long are you assigned there? I'm going to Ft. Benning.

I downloaded the Couch to 5K to my ipod touch, but haven't started it yet. I need to get started ASAP.

I suggest something silly and easy for the pushups. Everytime you go to the bathroom, make yourself stop and do 10 pushups (add on when you can). If you can't do on the ground pushup for sanitary reasons do them up against the wall and do more. It sounds silly, but you'll get used to doing them regularly.

Push ups are all technique: if you spread your arms out further, you don't have to travel as far and can achieve a higher number for the effort placed. Then when you reach muscle failure, incrementally move your arms medially in order to utilize different muscles and keep pushing; just remember to keep your hands in contact with the ground when moving them.

Thanks for the advice, I will try tonight!
