i'm hopefully graduating in may of this year, and im hoping to move to las vegas. does anyone out there know of good job opportunity areas for new graduates there? im only 22 years old, and i come from a small place, do i have a chance?

I don't live in Vegas, but used to live in L.A. and travel through there quite a lot. It can be quite a tough town if you don't have people there already to help you out; I hope that's the case.

I read one of the papers online from there daily: http://www.lvrj.com. I doubt they'll have the specific hospital information you're interested in, but it's a good way to see what's going on in the town -- outside of the gambling areas.

I lived in Vegas from 90 to 92, went to Community College of SOuthern Nevada for my LPN while hubby was stationed at Nellis. Personally, I didn't like Vegas: it was gang-infested with an absolutely horrid school system..ask about the 6th grade centers.

However, I worked at Sunrise and was very happy there. In fact, the current CNO was our supervisor then. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, that and the transient population, plus the inevitable problems that come along with a large gambling mecca were what I was kind of alluding to. Twenty-two is awful young for a town like Vegas unless you have a specific reason to be there like family, fiance, etc.

I currently live in Vegas and I enjoy it. I technically reside in Henderson though. The school system is pretty sad, but it has a lot to do with parenting -- unfortunately most of the population here works one to two jobs (and a majority of them work graveyards -- thats how it works with a 24 hour city), and unfortunately a lot of kids suffer because of that.

I love Vegas because there is sun almost everyday of the year. The cost of living is going down a bit. And nurses out here make EXCELLENT money and benefits; however, many of the hospitals have unsafe nursing:patient ratios.

To the OP, any hospital out here is wonderful to work at. I would try staying away from the Valley Health System -- I've heard they are hell to work for. Otherwise everywhere else seems decent (the county hospital UMC is the lowest paying hospital -- new nurses start out at $21 there). Otherwise anywhere else you go, new grads usually start out between $23 - $26.

Furthermore, there is always something to do in Vegas/Henderson. I personally do not gamble and always have something to do.

I work for the Valley Health System because of my scholarship commitment. It depends on which Valley Health System hospital that you work for. I heard that Valley Hospital is the worst because their nurse to patient ratio is bad, and they were trying to go on strike. I've always heard great things about St. Rose's 2 hospitals. UMC is in the middle of a major money handling scandal involving the CEO.
