Laptop for Nursing Program?

U.S.A. Nevada

Hi all!! In orientation for CSN's RN program they talked a bit about using a laptop in class. Does anyone recommend doing this? I've never used a laptop in a class before and I don't often see people with one. I think it might be really helpful though. Any thoughts??

At CSN, they do not allow recorders in the first semester. Not sure if this rule applies for subsequent semesters, though.

And I have to agree with you on reading the chapters. DON"T get behind in the reading!!

211 allows u to record and sometimes, we just hide it in our pencil cases hehe

I am getting a HP mini 1000. Its a netbook like the acer aspire one, but it is 10 inches and the keyboard is huge! (for the size of the computer). It is very compact and will fit in my purse. I highly recommend it. The price is only a little more than the acer aspire one.

I have a question which might be totally stupid but I've been looking into these for nursing school in jan. How are you able to put software on them if there is no cd drive?? Like I was assuming that program where we can have our text books online would be on a cd.

I had no problem with my baby size notebook! I uploaded my books onto it from the evolve site! In cases where u need a cd 2 install a program I load the cd into my pc then copy n paste the cd from its drive onto a flash drive and from the flash drive onto my baby notebook with no problem!

You can also get an external optical drive if you want, it plugs into the USB port. Most things are downloadable via the internet nowadays though~

Thanks for the tips. How do you deal with the battery power for those of you who already have them. Most say about 2.5 to 3 hours which seems would just barely get you through lecture, you'd have to find a powerpoint somewhere if you were stuck at college all day and wanting to use it.

I've not payed attention in the classrooms...but I'd guess that there would be outlets occasionally along the walls. You'd just make sure to sit near an outlet if your power is getting low. So far, I've found that my dell does pretty well with its battery. It even has a cool function that not only tells you the % of how much power it has left...but it gives you an approximate guess of how much time you have left (like in hours and minutes).

It sounds like the mini ones would be a pain to deal with - having to worry about how to get stuff off the CD's. I LOVE the evolve program - it has been fun to play with so far! Even if you just put it onto a regular desktop computer...you should totally try it!!

Okay...so I just unplugged my full charged laptop...and it tells me there's about 4 hours and 58 minutes of battery life left! That's pretty good, right? (I'm assuming if I were to use it constantly in the next few hours...it wouldn't really last that long though! I've never tried it, but probably should!)

well I love my mini no problems for me!!! you can always buy an 8/9 cell battery on ebay that goes for eight hours or so! not very hard to transfer programs to a flash drive and transfer them to my lil baby!! Everyone has there own preference though! really convieniant having this lil guy around though I must say! I've been real happy with it especially since I already have a home comp so this one is perfect for my needs! As far as functionality I already loaded up my ebooks with no prob along with the cd program for synching my smartphone! either way mini laptop big HD laptop can't go wrong!!

There are power outlets through out the classrooms, but my battery lasts all through lecture. Just make sure you turn on the powersaving options and it will be fine.

Thanks for the tips! I picked up the main bundle of our textbooks today for 101...seeing them all def has made me lean towards getting one of these mini laptops so I don't have to take my books to class.

haha! the wonders of technology though!
