Langston University, Probation?

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

What have you guys heard about Langston? I heard that they are on probation because of their low NCLEX pass rate.

I don't know if this is true but I was considering applying until I found that out. I don't want to go to a school with bad reputation. I want a good education. Although, just looking at the past ten years at their NCLEX first time pass rate, it's lower than most nursing schools in oklahoma and it does make me really wonder about Langston. You can see all nursing programs NCLEX pass rate here: http://www.ok.gov/nursing/nclexpass1.pdf

Anyone know anything or have any of you recently gone there. What can you say about the program?

I was originally planning to go to OU until I found out how competitive they are. I hear it's fairly easy to get into the program, especially because I have a 3.5 and pre reqs will be done. What do you think? Because besides OU, Langston is one of the only BSN programs in the state that I am very closely on track for. A lot of the others have several random classes that I would have to take in order to get into the program.

Advice is much appreciated! It's been a stressful past few months trying to figure this all out and my time is running out!

Thank you,

Nicole

I will be going to Langston January 2012 as well! I am trying to figure out where I can do my CNA during one of the school breaks. I am working full time and trying to make all the money i can before I have to quit and go full time. Where are you guys doing your CNA?

Samantha79, students don't just quit nursing school. I have never seen a student just decide to give up and quit. The reason your friend is not in the program is because she failed too many courses. Not everyone can be a nurse. It is very hard and it angers the student when they fail. Take information like that from anyone who has had a previous experience with a nursing school as a failed attempt. Students don't just quit and leave all their hardwork behind. Nursing school hours usually don't transfer to another program and it requires the student to start all over again. Before commenting on any school, know your facts. Nursing schools all over the US are looking at comments just like this and trying to eliminate people just like you from entering their program because of your unprofessional comments on a public forum that are untrue.

LJTulsa, Langston has been in Tulsa since 1992. Do more research before commenting on issues. Not to mention OSU-Tulsa would love to hear they are in the scary part of town along side OneOk field. Honestly, if your gonna make such ignorant comments then chances are you are not qualified to be in a program in Tulsa not to mention one you bad mouth.

Wow, why the hostility? Your comments really come off as hateful and rude. Isn't everyone entitled to their own opinion? As far as people don't just quit nursing programs, I know a girl who DID quit a nursing program only to have to apply and be accepted into another program. She was NOT flunking out. The program was not a good fit for her and the second program was. She is now an RN!

I'm taking my CNA course at a clinic in Broken Arrow, I believe Wings Healthcare it's off main street. I would find a class soon bc when I looked in May I only found one place in Tulsa with openings before September.. And I spent the afternoon calling several different places. Good luck with your search!

First, I want to say to the originator of this thread that research is the key, everyone's experiences will be different so you have to take opinions with a grain of salt. Second, Langston-Tulsa is not on the scary part of town. That's another ignorant opinion held and perpetuated by those who most likely have not even been on this part of town. I happen to work and live in the area not far from LU-Tulsa and I must say that its no scarier than any other part of Tulsa. Truth be told, I've never experienced crime until I moved to south Tulsa, add in the insane traffic and foolish drivers wielding 3000 pound vehicles like bicycles, and its death trap. But that's just my opinion.

Getting back on subject, LU-Tulsa's program is holding its own against other programs in Oklahoma and is not scoring lower than most schools. You have to compare apples to apples. Each program is different and you have to put into it what you want to get out of it. If you don't do the work, you won't pass the NCLEX, period, and that holds true for anything. College is about taking initiative and being responsible and you cannot expect to be spoon-fed your information so yes, there will be some self-directed study, that's the nature of college. If spoon-feeding is what you need then what type of nurse would you be anyway? It's best that you drop out of whatever program you're in and find something less critical to do.

I've heard that OU's program is unorganized but that was someone's opinion which wouldn't sway me from going there. I've heard that LU-Tulsa's program is vastly different from the main campus and that main campus is the preferred campus. I've also heard that the Tulsa campus has issues with its Black students (unfair treatment, undue pressure, etc.) but again, this is the experience/opinion of those people (incidentally i've heard this from several graduates of the program and a faculty member). Being a Black student, that still does not deter me from going there (by the way, I will be entering the program in Spring 2012 on a part-time basis). It's for me to take it upon myself and find out for myself. As far as the CNA, i'm going through Tulsa Tech, so far so good.

Bottom line, do the research and make the best decision for you based on your own personal circumstances. The person who doesn't want to come to the "scary" part of town is probably a mouse who wouldn't make it anywhere anyway. Good luck to all who are currently pursuing or will be pursuing a degree in Nursing.

Ash2012 - what times do the classes meet for the Wings program? I have talked to Interim and they have openings for December while we are on Christmast break, and it is a 4 week program, so I will get it just in time before we start in January at Langston. I wanted to do it earlier but I can't find a program that works around my 8-5 Monday-Friday work schedule.

Also, does anyone know what days of the week Langston meets for the nursing classes? Do we have any days off?

I'm assuming that the spring 2012 schedule will be similar to spring 2011. If that is the case, the first semester could go like this: 2 classes on Monday (all day), 2 classes on Tuesdsay (all day), a lab and clinic orientation on Wednesday (half day). The way they have it now, you could be at school for 2.5 days and the other 2.5 days for study, work or what have you.

Ok, thanks! So what are the actual times? I have thought about quitting my job or just moving to part time. But didn't know if it was possible since I work m-f 8-5 right now.

Yeah, that's definitely a consideration. Me, I plan to try to continue to work in the spring and try to scedule my work around the classes.

Here is a snapshot of spring 2011:

Concept found of prof practice Monday 9-11:40 a.m.

Health assessment Monday 1-3:40 p.m.

Intro to research Tuesday 9-10:40 a.m.

Community health Tuesday 1-3:40 p.m.

Health assessment lab Wednesday 8-9:40 a.m.

Orientation to clinic practice Wednesday 10-12:40 p.m.

If I continued to work full time the first semester, I would only be able to take one or two of the classes and try to work something out with my boss. They're very flexible here so I may be able to swing it. Otherwise, I'll be quitting.

Thanks so much! I hope I don't have to quit, I haven't even told my work that I applied into a nursing program. But hopefully they will let me go part time...otherwise I will be quitting as well. And that means taking out loans to pay the bills.

Have you applied for any scholarships that give you stipends to live off of (i.e., IHS, HRSA) I am worried about paying for school and not workin. I have a B.S. in Psych already so im ineligble for grants...just loans.

No, i've not applied for scholarships for nursing school but plan to. I've only seriously been looking for a short time and the ones I have seen are past the deadline. Your concern is my biggest concern as well, not being able to work. I, too, am ineligible for grants and such because I have a BS in Accounting and an MBA; loans are my only option.

Have you heard any work limits for nursing students? I heard or read somewhere that you are only allowed to work up to 20 hours a week. Have you heard anything like that?

Yes, I know a professor at the Langston campus and she said it is highly recomended to NOT work...if you have to only around 20 hours. I may try to work the first semester and see how well I do...but I def don't want to fail out.

Yeah, that's what I planned to do, at least work the spring semester. In the meantime I'll have to hustle and pay off as many bills as I can before I have to quit. My husband is supportive but at the same time he's apprehensive because we've always shared household responsibility but if I have to quit, it will fall on him. I think it'll all work out somehow.
