Langston University, Probation?

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

What have you guys heard about Langston? I heard that they are on probation because of their low NCLEX pass rate.

I don't know if this is true but I was considering applying until I found that out. I don't want to go to a school with bad reputation. I want a good education. Although, just looking at the past ten years at their NCLEX first time pass rate, it's lower than most nursing schools in oklahoma and it does make me really wonder about Langston. You can see all nursing programs NCLEX pass rate here: http://www.ok.gov/nursing/nclexpass1.pdf

Anyone know anything or have any of you recently gone there. What can you say about the program?

I was originally planning to go to OU until I found out how competitive they are. I hear it's fairly easy to get into the program, especially because I have a 3.5 and pre reqs will be done. What do you think? Because besides OU, Langston is one of the only BSN programs in the state that I am very closely on track for. A lot of the others have several random classes that I would have to take in order to get into the program.

Advice is much appreciated! It's been a stressful past few months trying to figure this all out and my time is running out!

Thank you,

Nicole

Yeah, that's what I planned to do, at least work the spring semester. In the meantime I'll have to hustle and pay off as many bills as I can before I have to quit. My husband is supportive but at the same time he's apprehensive because we've always shared household responsibility but if I have to quit, it will fall on him. I think it'll all work out somehow.

Yes, same here...my boyfriend has said he will take over the bills as well...but it is hard to rely on someone lol

I know, right! :uhoh3: Good luck I'm sure i'll see you around campus in the spring. We'll have to be sure to at least meet each other. I think we'll need all the support we can get.

Really? I have to do my CNA before January too. I need something that I can do while working that doesn't conflict with my schedule. How is Tulsa Tech?

I like it so far. We get a lot of handouts; each lesson packet has copies of the powerpoint presentation for writing notes and questions to answer from the book and/or powerpoint. We also get a review sheet for the tests which have been pretty easy so far. We've had two tests and will have our third tomorrow. The instructors are pretty knowledgeable, the main instructor is an LPN who has worked at St. Simeon and St. Francis; she became a CNA right out of high school. The other instructor is a veteran of nursing, she's from the time when they didn't have nursing school, you just learned through the hospital you worked at. We started the lab portion on Monday and its been fun, learning to transfer patients out of bed, move them up in the bed if they slid down, transferring patients to a wheelchair, how to let a patient safely fall, how to wash our hands, what's clean, and what's contaminated, disinfected, or sterile. This was one of the cheapest classes, around $280 but you do have to buy the book which was $62, the TTC patch, $4, white scrubs, range from $10 at Walmart on up. You also have to have your watch with a second hand, all leather shoes. Then there's the background checks, immunization tracker, drug test. The class cost was cheap but after adding in all the extras, i don't know.

If you want to know what the school / program is really like, you need to ask the students that attend it. Yes, you will have a difference in opionions. The "students" are the ones that have the real story... ask them

Well seeing that I do not know any of the current or past students that would be difficult to do. Thanks!

I understand... I was just referring to some of the comments that were left that are clearly not students, what would you like to know? I'll help the best I can.

STAY AWAY from LANGSTON TULSA! They USED to have the BEST program in Tulsa but that is not the case anymore. The teachers come and go there, in fact they just lost their director, Dr. Talley, director that ran the college in Tulsa as well as most of their staff. I went there and I know students that also still go there. If you can go to RSU, OU, ORU, TU or OSU then that is where you need to go. Langston and Tulsa Community College are the worst in Tulsa. It will not take you 4 semesters to graduate from there, it will take more.

The main problem with this school is that the teachers have the fundamental idea that they are "gate keepers" to the nursing community instead of professional nursing instructors. That is the BIG key. They dont care there. They just want you money. I do know of people that have left the school and gone to other nursing schools due to the teachers and the BS at this school. The teachers also tried to blame the students on the low pass rate on the NCLEX saying they were "cheating". I was there when this all took place. One person got the test bank to ETI and the ATI tests which at the time you had to pass or you would fail the course even if you made an A in the class. It all goes back to the teachers and them not wanting to help every student be successful and pass the program and the NCLEX.

So from someone that went there, stay away. I also can recommend Tulsa Tech if you need to work and go to school. I know a few people that left Langston and went there for a year and got their LPN and worked at the same time and loved it. Also if you get your LPN you can bridge into any RN program you want to without all the competition and you save a lot of money. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone to Tech while I was working on my pre-req's and then bridge into a RN or BSN program.

I was thinking about applying to Langston nursing program i have a AS in allied health my gpa is a 2.8 but after this semester it will be a 3.0 and hopefully that will get me in the ADN program or BSN? Is my gpa enough to get me into langston nursing school? please answer
