A few years ago, UVa conducted a scientific experiment with Kindles in the MBA program. Students in one section (60) were all provided a Kindle DX. Students in the other section were not. At the end of the semester students and faculty were evaluated.A key finding regarded how people studied when reading. Annotating (underlining, adding comments) is doable on the e-device, but it can be very clunky. If you are one who likes to mark up the text, then a 3-D book may be best. The other complaint was that it was hard for students across sections using different technologies (book and Kindle) to function in study groups. One could just not say to all "just turn to page 241 in the book where the author says "Blah, blah" as the pages do not line up across devices Thumbing around an e-device is also not as easy as thumbing through a book. For the student who did not ever annotate a book and just liked to read whenever (and wherever) then the e-device was a benefit. But I would encourage you to think how you study. Also, do you take notes in class? The MBA students felt that then needed a laptop to take notes (even if they had a Kindle).

I hardly ever bring my laptop to school but instead iPad. However I always hand write all my notes as that's what works best for me ( I then generally type them up at home and then make out flashcards so I see the material a lot).
It depends on as others stated your program and the type of student you are. I'm the type of student that prefers writing papers at a cafe sometimes instead of only at home. Some people don't like that. While you can type papers on the iPad it's not the easiest and quickest by any means. Granted if you're an apple person, the MacBook Air is really light and pretty affordable for a MacBook. Maybe that'd be something to look into.

Everyone has their own technological preferences, but I would highly recommend the MacBook Air.
Here's why:
It only weighs 2.38 lbs and when it's closed and in its sleeve, it's comparable to the size of a slim notebook. It boots up and shuts down instantaneously allowing me to quickly access the internet, my documents and online academic materials. Web browsing, accessing videos, researching and writing papers has never been easier. It's a smaller laptop, but it has a full size keyboard which is very comfortable. The "track pad" is also convenient in that I can swipe between screens/web pages and even alter the size of the text.
Apple products tend to be on the pricier side (I think a brand new 11" MBA costs around $999), but I was able to get mine refurbished for $700 from the Apple store and it came with a one year warranty. I've had it for 9 months and have never had any problems with it.
Good luck with your search, and best of luck to you in nursing school! :-)

I have an iPad that I use to type up all of my papers and do everything imaginable on the only thing I have are mandatory videos to watch and that is the only thing I use my macbook pro for since they are on CDs. They also come with DVD's but we only have one tv in my house. Lol! I haven't run into any other problems. I can print with an app directly from my iPad which was fairly cheap. I also have a keyboard case which I love!! Pages also let me format my papers the way my teacher need them. I definitely love it. It's so light weight.
It's a beautiful day to save lives.
