L&D RN wants to get certified as a Doula

GET WITH: http://www.dona.com (Doulas Of North America website) for info about becoming a certified doula.

And check w/your State BON to discover issues (if any) related to increased liability. From where I sit, there are no INCREASED liability issues; you assume a LOT of these (if not all), under the auspices of your licensure and in the nature of your speciality. Good luck in your pursuit. I think it's great you wish to do this! And believe, me there are more RN's who are also certified doulas than you may think!:kiss

I am an L&D RN and Doula. and do not find any increased liability issues. only problem i have is when i am with a patient as their doula, especially if it is at one of the hospitals i work at,they tend to expect me to act as their nurse. i kindly remind them i am just the patients doula for the day.:)

Excellent point, Mark. That you are a doula does not surprise me at all! I am sure in either role, you are wonderful.:kiss

I agree with Deb, DONA (http://www.dona.com) is the way to go. It's not a terribly long process to get certified, and with your experience, you'd be certified fast :)

imened37- i was certified through DONA visit their web site it gives all the info. I just got all the listed references, completed the requirements meet with a local doula and paid my fees.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great information. I have done quite a lot of investigation into the Doula training, and I have ordered my training pack, and all the books on the reading list plus a few additional books that were recommended by a CNM that I work with. I am going to my training seminar in March 2003, I am in hopes of going to a free conference in Denver Colorado in May, 2003. I have decided to go with the CAPPA certification ( I am also going to become a member of DONA). I am including some links I found to be very helpful.
