IDDM Pt's On Insulin Pumps
Hello there I was wondering what your Hospital's STAFFING policy is on Post partum patients with IDDM, on an Insulin pump? Patient-RN ratio for these types of patients? Thanks Deniseldrn:kiss

pct debate
I was reading this thread and thought I would give my 2 cents.... My grandmother was in end stage renal disease and was to go for a Colonoscopy the following day. The doctor wanted her to drink the "go lightly" to cleanse her out. My grandmother drank some of the "go lightly", but then refused to drink the rest. At 3am that night 2 PCT's came into my grandmothers semiprivate room, and tried to force a NG down. Scarred the living crap out of my poor dying grandmother, and her roomate. The PCT's also left huge bruises on my grandmother arms and hands where they tried to hold her down, to get the NG in. MY mother and I were furious about the incident, my grandmother died a month later. My mother was going to do something about it, but was overwhelmed by grandma's death. I was very upset to find out that a PCT could place an NG, obviously more education is needed! Deniseldrn

Lazy Student Nurse Preceptors!
I am a fairly new RN as I graduated in 2001. When I was going to school I had some really great nurses show me things and try to help me. I also had some nurses who just resented having a student in their presence, and tried their hardest to cause me trouble. I managed to make it out of school alive, at least I think I did..lol On my particular floor a lot of the RN's who don't like students, don't like anyone.. and I mean anyone! On my unit it has been said that a lot of the Nurses have "strong" personalities, and that does not always mix well with everyone. I personally love to have a student along for the day. I enjoy giving someone an experience that I never had in my OB rotation. My OB rotation was awful, and nobuddy showed me anything! I have found some students really eager to learn, and others would rather stand around and chit chat with their classmates all day. Then there are still others who just "know it all" and they don't need anyone to show them anything. I know that when I was in school, I never sat around the nurses station reading magazines and talking to my classmates during clinical time. I stopped in on my unit this past week to get some books, and there were students just sitting around reading magazines and chit chatting away with one another. Our unit was busy at the time, and all of the staff was running their tails off. I really enjoy working with students, heck I was a student once myself and appreciated anyone that would help me. Goodluck to the original poster of this thread, I am sorry you had such a negative experience. I think it is great that you are so eager to learn, and willing to take the bull by the horns during clinical. Starting IV's is a skill that is very nerve racking to learn, I still shake like a leaf when I start em...I wish I would have been taught this skill in Nursing school. My patients prolly think I am a nervous wreck..LOL Deniseldrn Deniseldrn

OB TraceVue
Karen, Hi there! the last facility that I was working at was also a LDRP unit that was using Ob tracevue. I thought it was a great system and it made charting so much easier. The facility I was at had a computer in each pt room, as well as one in the nursery and one at the nurses station. I LOVED IT!!! You will love it too! The only draw backs to this system were that you were not able to pull off a FHT strip and look at it from start to finsih, however you are able to scoll back and look at the strip. Also there was no where to chart for the baby postpartum checks and assessments(we charted on clipboards that were hanging off the baby's crib). I now work at a unit that does not use this system and it kinda sucks, I really miss the ease of the old way! I liked charting on the clipboard much better than having to document all feedings, BM's and voids and assessments in a computer. I think you will love OB tracevue, it is very user friendly I learned it the first day I started on my old unit. I wish my hospital that I am currently working at would get OB tracevue! Good Luck to you!
