Hi everybody,
I am a new RN in a nursing home. I was taught two things here: meds pass and treatments. I did well on both, had no problems with either. Then I get a call today from my boss who tells me she had me on the schedule but took me off because I need more training. She said "you don't know how to charge"
She took away my hours because of this and said she'll try to give me more training. Im curious what she meant by I don't know how to charge. This isn't something that you learn from a book. What can I do to improve? I don't want to get fired. I was scared to ask her about what she meant because I don't want her to think Im a dummy. Is there any books on this that would help me with this topic? Thank you
I don't think you can be taught how to be a charge nurse. Its something you learn as you go. With experience.
Yes, I agree, but you can learn what are the charge nurse duties. Since this I a LTC question, it might be different than the hospitals. There are no classes for this in LTC. It would be nice tho. Years ago I remember inservices on how to be a better manager/ supervisor...we so need these back.
Anyway...ASK questions! For the most part, in LTC, charge nurses also work the floor. In addition to those duties, you will be the go to person (unless you have a supervisor or unit manager). You might have to do the shift assignments for the CNAs, call the doc or family and do some desk work. Again...it all depends.

if my boss took away my hours i'd certainly ask why right then and there.
i'm not trying to be mean but, your fear of asking questions where answers are due shows that you are intimidated by your position. are you also afraid to make sure that your co-workers are also doing their jobs?
