Knitting during class: ok or not?

Hi folks,

so I'm an auditory/kinesthetic learner, and I recently decided to start bringing my knitting to class, to see if it kept me more engaged in the lecture and off my electronics. It's pretty much a silent hobby, so I was surprised when a friend/classmate mentioned that she felt it was distracting and rude to the professor and other students. This is a class with many people on their laptops/tablets for lecture. Anyway, I grew up with a knitting mama who had hers everywhere, so I've never really seen it as inappropriate. Just curious what you all think? Would it bother you? More or less than people using electronics or eating in class?

Thanks for for the thoughts :)

I'm sorry you chose to believe I wasn't telling you the truth. I have no idea how the mobile AN is seen on various phones.

I'm not disputing that quote, I'm disputing the quote I took a picture of, which shows me as the author which isn't true.

Thank you, RNsRWe. SionainnRN I have no way to control how things appear so I really can't give you a mea culpa here. I told you what I posted on the desktop version. End of discussion.

That is not how it appears on the full site, perhaps the app does not have the capability of showing multiple quotes or you haven't enabled it if such an option exists? Either way, instead of debating it on the thread, perhaps it would be better settled via the help desk. Back to knit one, perl two?

I usually use my regular phone browser when getting on the site here, so I have been seeing the same thing anyone using a desktop/laptop would. Curiosity got to me and and I pulled up the AN app on my phone to see how the post appear. There is a glitch with the app and when nursel56 quoted wavewatchers post in the app it shows it as sionainnrn. Definitely a glitch in app with multiple quotes in one post, reporting it to the help desk will hopefully they will be able to fix the issue.

No it's not. Tapping your finger is not the same as playing a trumpet during class. See where I'm going with this? Knitting is highly distracting - let's stop pretending like it's something everybody can ignore like someone using their cell phone.

Playing a trumpet is s bit extreme. I personally would find someone using their cell phone very distracting if they were in front of me. If someone was sitting in the back row knitting, texting, or playing the air trumpet I would not be distracted ir care.

Who knew knitting could be such a debated topic! All my posts were in fun. :-) If I hurt a knitters feelings....I'm sorry. My best friend knits. Very badly I might add. I still love her. :-)

My best friend knits & crotchets too but I know she never did it in class. I think there is a time & place for everything. Class is not the time nor the place to knit, text or be on the internet.

You got me at air trumpet!! Hahaha!

If someone sits in the back row playing the air trumpet during class, it wouldn't distract the front row, however I BET it would distract the professor, lol!!!

I think you all sound pretty snotty and self righteous in my opinion. I know exactly what the young lady means. When you're sitting in class for 3-4 hours it tends to get a little boring. I mean, come on ladies. The methodology we employ in teaching our newbies and the material they're taught is SOOOOOO irrelevant to actually being an RN she might as well be knitting. The young lady is simply trying to occupy herself whilst listening to expend her nervous/bored energy. It's the same reason I am typically singing to myself (under my breath) in the trauma bay while taking care of some bloody pulp. It's not that I am not paying attention or "being unprofessional" its that I am just doing what I need to do to get it done and keep rolling through the shift.

The downfall of our profession is the tolerance of you self righteous, self important, snarky ladys with a chip on your shoulders. Either offer support and help for those trying to learn or shove it and stay OFF the student page. Get a hobby or something instead of needlessly beating up on the greenies. Maybe YOU ALL SHOULD START KNITTING.

BTW, if you didn't say something mean then this is obviously not aimed at you so dont freak out.
