Hi there,
I just wanted to start a thread for anyone who is in the Kentucky Board of Nursing's KARE program. I thought this would be a good place to share/exchange info and lend some support to one another!
THIS. I understand addiction. This system is not set up for rehab. It's a facade because they do not care. It's putative and that's not fair. I do not have SUD either. Never have. Passed every drug screen. Passed my eval. No history. Nothing. This is nothing but a money grab from the BON and everyone they're in bed with. They can't run off our little $65/year. It has to come from somewhere. I took mine to a lawyer, but I wasn't working bc I was terminated. Lost my next job even though they knew about the investigation and possible outcome, when the agreement came down. A lawyer retainer was more than I had period. They would not take the case without $7k-10k upfront depending on the lawyer. I couldn't even buy food. I won the fight against unemployment from the facility who reported me. I was able to work even though I was unemployed at the time, so not taking the agreement as a single mom was not an option. I had to pay for drug screens I couldn't afford. It's been 2 years since I entered into my 1 year agreement I got through without 1 problem, and I'm still in financial shambles. They do this to ensure we can't fight back. I know they're not there to protect us, but how about not actively trying to destroy us under the ploy of "help.” It's so disgusting to me. I'm in therapy dealing with all of it currently. I have a great job now that I love, but I will never work bedside again. If I choose to leave this job, I will likely just call it a day on nursing all together.
You all have got to STOP posting personal comments about the BON in here. They are monitoring every single word you say on here and will use it against you. Doesn't matter how positive you towards your own situation or others, they will find that one negative thing you said and hold it over your head if need be. If you want to vent your frustrations, do it through personal messages or outside of the forum. Trust me.

I'm pretty anonymous.

If you passed your drug tests and substance eval how did you end up in the 5 year monitoring program?! I am legit concerned because I have a substance eval coming up soon with no history and this makes me nervous. I don't want to end up in a 5 year program. Help.
I didn't. I was placed on a 1 year which felt more like a "well we did all this work so we're going to get something back.” Which means it's permanently on my record. No offer of the 5 year plan. I had to go in and tell my side of the story to every job interview for months and no one would touch me. I got so lucky in my job now as a Street Outreach nurse working with the unhoused. I have no idea why they gave me a chance but it's the best work environment, good pay, rewarding job. Without these people, I'm sure my career would not have been recoverable. Not to mention my spirit was broken after it was all said and done. The 5 year program sounds daunting, but at least people see KARE and work with that. Some places get a kick back for hiring nurses in KARE. My old job did, I was in leadership so I know for a fact they did. And when it's over, it's like it never happened. Also, the BON has 0 guidelines for discipline. I know a retired BON member. He said they could have come in off lunch and how much they enjoyed lunch could determine their mood and your punishment. You may get lucky and this may blow over for you. I really hope it does.

The monitoring agencies police themselves. What about the nurses in CA ready to finish and they were told they had to pass narcotics for 6 months before they finished?
Right we can't win any case LOL lawyers are pointless with the BON

A lot of people here don't have a SUD and here we are. It's a money grab!

You not having an SUD has nothing to do with it. In EVERY consent order, it says the BON can modify the terms/lengthen the terms at their discretion. Legally, they can do that in California. It's not OK morally, but legally they can.
You seeing a lawyer has nothing to do with getting out of monitoring early. They can't help you there. They can absolutely tell you that you don't have to take on the responsibility of ensuring your own test results are in the system. I can assure you, that's not in writing because it's not physically possible. The testing agency not only does it, they legally have to. Not even your case manager can place results in the system because the case manager doesn't work for the testing agency.
No substances, checking in daily, a certain amount of meetings, the type of test they choose, reported that are due and when they are do, and yes, a statement saying the BON can lengthen your consent order if they choose is all in writing and legal. It's literally ILLEGAL by law for a nurse to somehow, someway, enter or ensure their test results are in the system. A lawyer would help you with that and your case manager would be in hot water and you would likely be assigned a different one.
