Kentucky Board KARE

Published

Hi there,

I just wanted to start a thread for anyone who is in the Kentucky Board of Nursing's KARE program. I thought this would be a good place to share/exchange info and lend some support to one another! :angrybird12:

I know a couple people who had lawyers and got their stuff dismissed. I guess a crap shoot tho when you probably need to pocket the money to survive.

What was dismissed with the court or BON

Hi,

I recently completed all my requirements to get reinstated. I was on a year of reinstatement requirements and met all them without difficulties. I have 16 mos sober. However I was offered 2 things. I was offered a 4 year limited probation with things such as no controlled substances prescribing, counseling, so on and so on, things I'm already doing. However the 4 years does not start until I am working and only while I'm working. However I was also offered the KARE program, which from my understanding offers more of an umbrella of protection and is basically similar to what my other order would be. I have 15 days to decide if I want to take the KARE program Or keep my agreed order for limited probation. She said it's not common that people get the option like I do so it makes me feel like I should take it just to have the protection. I don't plan on messing up but we know as addicts we never say never. I just want to make the best decision for myself. Any opinions??

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your sobriety! I was not offered KARE. Just a one year monitoring with no stipulations on my license but other disciplinary actions. It's there forever. It was difficult to get a job. With KARE, like you said, there's a degree of protection. One of those benefits, in my opinion, is people ARE willing to work with KARE even with restrictions but not someone just on probation with monitoring with no restrictions. AND you get the benefit of having it wiped from your license when it's completed. I got my agreement to sign and requested KARE, but because no SUD was found to be substantiated, I was refused. But I have to have the accusation of diversion in my record and have the headache and expense of monitoring. Oh OK. I personally would have chosen KARE knowing in 5 years I would have a clean license.

Thank you so much for that info and opinion. Also anyone know how to get my name changed on here!! It linked up to my Google account and I do not want my last name on there LOL! I feel like I'm leaning to taking the KARE program. My investigator even called me personally this morning to discuss it and I really appreciated that because she didn't have to. Made me feel like they were maybe encouraging it or at least wanted to ensure I saw it was an option

The BON benefits from the KARE program like you do. Someone IN KARE might have a different opinion. My grass just might be greener on the other side, ya know? Hopefully someone chimes in who has experience. As far as your name and Google account YIKES. Can you wipe this account and just start a new one? I have no idea LOL when you're just out here trying to figure how to keep your career together and the universe out here with their BS linking your Google account 😒

Hi! I just completed the KARE program in August! Personally, I would go with KARE. You said your probation would be 4 years so it's only 1 more year. For the confidentiality, it's not considered disciplinary action (so you can mark no on that question on every job application), and it disappears once you complete it. The day I was done I looked up my license and there were no reports or anything and I was back to a multi state license. Now I can go into any job interview without worrying when the look up my license or having to explain, for example, a disciplinary action from 6 years ago that I completed monitoring for.

Just my two cents!

Thank you so much for your opinion!! It's helpful!! I will still have a disciplinary action from my previous one year of reprimand unfortunately. I'm a nurse practitioner and I'm worried about trying to find work with these over my head

No problem! If you're willing to work as an RN instead of an NP I know dialysis will hire you! I work at a dialysis company and am now in management and I was hired 2 years into my KARE contract.

Dialysis wouldn't hire me. No LTC. I finally got a home health job which wasn't bad. The pay was an adjustment to say the least. I got promoted pretty quickly to Regional Nurse Educator. It paid really well but my regional director from the main office was abusive. I thought I was stuck, but I started applying. I got hired on at a housing focused nonprofit as the street outreach nurse and it's amazing. If some of those "guarantee" settings turn you down, just keep at it. Someone will give you a chance to prove yourself.

You all have got to STOP posting personal comments about the BON in here. They are monitoring every single word you say on here and will use it against you. Doesn't matter how positive you towards your own situation or others, they will find that one negative thing you said and hold it over your head if need be. If you want to vent your frustrations, do it through personal messages or outside of the forum. Trust me.

There is zero I'm saying about the BON. I've stated nothing untruthful but only facts and againmy brother is an attorney and I more than welcome the challenge. Repercussions taken by any board based on a nurse stating truth is unlawful.
