I'm getting ready to apply to Kent's ABSN UH-Cohort for Fall 2015. Anyone else applying too? I know the program is extremely competitive so of course Im super nervous. The way the UH cohort is set up would be so perfect for my schedule and family, so knowing that only 16 of over 100 applicants are accepted makes my stomach churn. Im hoping to find some other people in the same boat with me! :)
My info for the application- I have my BS in Maternal Child Health specializing in Lactation. I am an IBCLC (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant), I also have my ALC (Advanced Lactation Consultant) and CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor). I currently work as a lactation consultant PRN at UH-Elyria, previous to getting hired I volunteered as a lactation consultant there for 1.5 years doing breastfeeding support group, and inpatient and outpatient consults, so hopefully that'll help my application having 'healthcare' experience. I have a 3.5 overall GPA and all Blue classes, prereq's, and core classes done. I know my GPA isnt the strongest and that is what has me worried.
How about you all?!
I just officially submitted my application, my stomach is in knots! Now to wait over 2 months to see where this leads! Hope someone applying to the same program sees this and we can commiserate!

I competed the ABSN program many years ago. I just know we graduated with about 60% of the original starting class.
Because of how intense it was, or because of other reasons?
I just got the email that I have been invited for an interview! I hope some other people going to interview find this post too! :)

I just graduated from that cohort. With those stats and experience, they'll love you. A 3.5 is more than enough. Good luck!
Thanks JavaRx! Any advice on getting through the program? How much travel was there to Kent? Were the clinicals actually on weekends?
bnatale- Good luck!! Mine is Thursday at 1:40, I didnt see the email until almost a day after it was sent so the morning slots were all filled up. Where do you live? Will this be a big commute for you? Im in Columbia Station, near Strongsville.
Clinicals were 100% weekends only. There will be some trips to Kent, maybe a few (3 maybe ?) every 7 weeks. The majority of the time, you will be driving to Cleveland. The program included Sundays towards the beginning, but those tapered off towards the middle through the end.
Please don't be nervous about the workload. It is very manageable. Yes, some tests I literally studied for 15-20 hours and still got a B. I have two kids and worked 3 days a week. When something is important, you just make it happen. I had no previous hospital experience and I loved every second. Classes, ehhh. Clinicals, simply amazing. You can do it!! We had 4 people that didn't make it out of 20. Awesome people that I am sure will find their own path to their nursing degree.
Now for the negative. The program is very disorganized. Your group will be used to test new strategies on. Other cohorts will get treated differently. Ignore all of this and get your degree. Don't get caught up in all that drama, just concentrate on YOUR degree that you paid for.
Best of luck!! Also, message me with all the stuff they tell you to buy. I will save you a small fortune.
For the Sunday portion, is it all day? I told work I'd be able to work the opposite day of whatever day the clinical was :/ oops.
Im glad to hear the workload is manageable, I have 3 kids (2, 4, and 6 years old) and work 2-4 days per week, (sometimes more) whatever is needed. Though my coworkers are very supportive of being applying to this program and will work with me when needed.
Where did you park for the classes? Was it hard to find parking? Did you have to pay for it? I went to the CC, UH, Case area of downtown for the first time today and holy cow, that looks congested and miserable to navigate!
Im very used to disorganized programs, haha, my BS was EXTREMELY disorganized. I think the program grew to fast and they were just scrambling like crazy just to keep up. Im pretty good at ignoring those things. As long as the program prepares us for the NCLEX then I dont mind some trial and error.
How should I get a hold of you once I find out if I get accepted and get the purchase list? Thanks so much for the offer!!
Thanks!! I live in New Castle, Pa, so it's about an hour or so commute. Since I had to be a nerd and pick the first time slot, I'm just going to stay up there tomorrow night. I'm super nervous! I'm curious as to how many applicants there are, seeing as you and I are the only two who have commented on this post lol.
Ive had this post here over two months and this is the first action its been getting! There were 40 interview slots, and the website says they average at least 100 applicants per cycle, and I would guess that goes up with the cycles that are admitting two cohorts like this one.
I created this post, and a Facebook group to try to find other applicants. No one has found the FB group yet though. Im hoping once/if I get in then the others of the cohort will join. FB groups are super awesome for keeps up to date with people in a primarily distance program.
