Keck Hospital of USC RN Versant Program March 2014

Nurses Career Support

Published

Has anyone applied to the USC Keck Hospital Versant RN Residency Program (App filing period 10/7-14) for March 2014 employment? I would like to start a forum and update each other about the process! If previous applicants have gone through their residency programs before feel free to share your thoughts on the processes and experience!

Good luck everyone!

No no I meant I met one of the nursing directors from Norris and she said USC has a low census of patients.

Still nothing here either... And no status changes. I would hope they wouldn't cancel anything because of pt. census, since it tends to be a cyclic, constantly changing number, and also unit dependent. They still would need to have a full staff to cover a full census, and those with the least seniority (potentially/hopefully us) get called off. I love ICU, but that is one thing that I don't like about it, is compared to Med-Surge/ Tele/ ER, you can get called off a lot more.

If hired does anyone plan to move closer? What's considered decent housing around there?

Maybe they are thinking about canceling it since the census is so low.

That's crazy. i just interviewed at another hospital yesterday and they said that they barely have enough beds to hold all of the patients they're getting. I imagine then, that Keck's census is low because they're turning people away due to different reasons. Believe me--there are plenty of people out there who could be filling these beds.

Keck's Versant Program has been going strong since 2007, I don't believe they'll be canceling anytime soon. As for the census, it's never low. Been volunteering there for the past two years and its always packed, especially 5 North.

It's a new week... Let's see if it starts today

I just got an email today saying that I am moving on to the panel interviews for the OR Training Program. I was interviewed for one of the units for their Versant Program during the summer, but unfortunately was rejected. I am happy they selected me again for an interview, but have a dilemma.

I was hired as a Relief Nurse (per-diem) in PICU for one of the LA County hospitals. I will probably start some time in the new year. Also I am currently doing the EPIC position for Providence while I wait for my nursing job to start. If I were selected for the OR Training Program it would be such great experience to work for USC, but I would have to give up my job with the county (which in the long-term would be really great!). Also, I don't want to be pigeon holed into perioperative nursing, but am also petrified of working in the PICU because I am a new grad!

Regardless, I feel so blessed for the opportunities I am getting. For all the new grads please don't lose faith! Your day will come sooner or later! I waited 7-8 months after I graduated! Just keep applying and when you least expect it, something(s) will come your way!

Congrats, do you mind me asking what floor you got an interview for last time? I heard from other people that the managers get a stack of names and from there they interview only a few in the pile? Do you know if thats true or do they email everyone from the stack and then make their choice from there?

Last time I interviewed for hematology/oncology and it was a panel interview with the Nurse Director, Nurse Manager, Nurse Educator, and the Versant Program Manager.

I honestly don't know how they decide who gets an interview. There may be people who help pre-select candidates because they receive such a high volume of applicants for their program(s). In my opinion, I think it was my personal statement that got me an interview because on paper I'm just like everybody.

They spend 2 weeks interviewing for all units, but I don't know how many per unit they interview? Maybe 10? (I got this number from an email with names interviewing for hemo/onc last time.) From there 2-3 people get selected depending on the need of the unit.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the information, it was really helpful!

@LR_RN26

Thank you so much for all the information. Do you know if they already have all their interviews scheduled for OR program? I too applied for OR and unfortunately did not receive an email...wondering if I may still or if it's a done deal?

P.S. Best of luck on your interview? When is it, may I ask?
