Kaplan SD LVN-RN May 2013

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hello all!

I am a current LVN applying to Kaplan san diego lvn- rn to start may 2013. I graduated from Kaplan LVN program in February and currently work and volunteer at a local hospital. At first I was very ANTI private school, but I have working at my prereqs since 2007, and after so many years of school and not being accepted into a CC I am happy to go to Kaplan. I really enjoyed the LVN program and feel that I am a very proficient nurse.

ANyways, Im looking for anyone else who is also applying and wants some encouragement! We are all in this together!!!

Hey all I'm going to take the ktp tomorrow so hopefully I will do well. For the LVN I scored high 80s without studying. I also heard that we should know by the end of February. One if te things that is a bummer is the program is 20 months... That's a long time considering the adn is 24. I should have done straight RN, but I can say that having a few years of experience as an LVN will be very beneficial.

In a way a feel stupid for paying so much money for this license, especially considering if my grades were a little better I could get into a community college. Not to mention we have to then go on for the BSN

What are all your thoughts on this?

@jujubees I will be starting the ADN program in May but I'm in FL and our program is 18 months. For the SLE you only need a 21. For everyone else who has attended Kaplan how do you feel about this school?

GOOD LUCK on the ktp!! Don't be shy about using your breaks between sections:). WOW only 4 months shorter is pretty rough. I do remember hearing somewhere though that the load is lighter for you guys. Maybe you can make up for the length by being able to work more hours during school than you would have in the regular adn route. I'm sure your LVN experience will help you get into Kaplan too! I think that it'll be ok to have to pay for the BSN later because they have some much cheaper RN-BSN online programs out there that I've checked out (keeping busy while not in school!) I'm thinking I'll go to and try to finish it quickly to save money (because you pay per semester). I've seen postings on here from people saying that they finished their RN-BSN at wgu in only 6 months! in which case it would cost around I think $4000 or so including all of their fees and everything! That's so cheap when you're comparing it to Kaplan haha. I'm sure it's super hard though.

Going the community college route does take longer as well. So if you take into account the difference in how much money you'll be making as an RN compared to whatever you're doing now (for me, NOTHING!) then it helps make Kaplan look a little less expensive.

@saldridge WOW only 18 months! I wonder how they worked that, that's pretty awesome. Interesting how your program is different over there, in San Diego they do require an SLE score of 24. It seems to me like they might leave room for subjectivity in their admission process though. My experience is from longer than 2 years ago (it clearly says it must be within the past two years in one of the papers I got) but the advisors told me it wasn't a problem. I'm actually pretty worried that I won't be accepted because they may have been mistaken! :/

Hopefully there is no mistake and you will be starting in May. Good luck!!

Yay good job!

Awesome job @tawnyalee.

Thanks @Jujubees.

Hi all I go to Kaplan in Las Vegas, and it's also 18 months like the one in Florida. For me it's only like 13 1/2 months because I had 6 transfer credits. 24 months is long but worth it :)

@queen2be what is your program like? Do you like it? Hopefully I will have credits transfer in.

@ saldridge yea i like it I didn't do the first term because I had transfer credits but the second term Is just boring me right now because I'm doing college algebra and academic strats. I'm almost done with term 2 and will be going to term 3 in February. I'm just ready to be done with school already.

Hello everyone! I too applied for the may 2013 ADN program at Kaplan, SD. They told me that there are 20 guaranteed seats for LVN to RN step up, and everyone else is competing for the remaining 45 seats. They said to shoot above a 90% on the KTP in reading and math, writing is not counted unless necessary. I vaguely ywent over study guide and got a 93 in math and 91 in reading and a 30 on the wonderlic. I think if you are nervous use the study guide to your advantage and you should be fine :) I know that my packet has been submitted for acceptance, and I was told they would be calling me around the first week of February. I don't think private schooling is ideal for all, I know for myself it wasn't my first choice. I decided to go to Kaplan after years of waiting for community college acceptance, with no avail. I am a recent graduate of Kaplans MA program (alumni get points towards their acceptance!) I went this route because my plan was to go straight into the RN program and not work. I have been very pleased with the education I have received at Kaplan thus far and am very excited to begin the ADN program, that is if I get in! Also, you ARE able to transfer the credits to Kaplan university or university of Phoenix, as previously mentioned in this thread. Overall, I think that the ADN program is a good one that is thorough and there are good passing rates on the NCLEX!
