Kapiolani CC ADN selection

  1. What was your TEAS score for KCC?

Hi All,

I am curious as to what a competitive applicant has for an ATI TEAS score, GPA, prereqs. I understand the minimum TEAS was 78, but it has been temporarily lowered to 65.

Obviously, the higher the scores the better, but what does an average accepted applicant's scores look like?

What is a solid TEAS score for acceptance, do I have to score in the 90s or are scores in 70s adequate?

Do most selectees earn A's on their Zoology and MICR, or are B's competitive? Essentially, I am wondering if I should fork out additional money to retake the zoology classes to raise the B's to A's or is that an unwise use of tight funds?

Any guidance is appreciated.

I took the NLN at UHM several weeks ago and got an overall score of ~150. Do you know what a good NLN score for UHM is?

Cpo1893 that's a really high score! I say try for uhm! Highest I saw on here was 141-145. What is your gpa for Pre req and cum?

Thanks Ellers. It is kinda weird, I took the TEAS and got an overall 80, but didn't score high enough in the math section to qualify for UH, so I took the NLN, which I thought was a little harder than TEAS. I have A's in most of the prereqs, but am waiting on 2 grades from summer school and I think they may fall just below As. So I may have 2 Bs on the prereqs. I didn't want Bs, but some teachers are super challenging, especially in the compressed time of a summer school, but I feel I learned a lot. I am not sure of the cumulative GPA, because I am unsure what grades will be used for figuring. I have credits going back 22 years and I don't think they count classes taken previous to a certain time frame, I just don't know the cutoff. I also do not have any applicable medical experience to add to an application.

Great job CPO1893! That's a killer NLN score! I agree with Ellers about applying to UH. An NLN score like that is very competitive, considering you have close to the 99 percentile in each category (Math, Reading and Science).

The pre-reqs used for acceptance are

Minimum grade of C (not C-) in the following prerequisite courses**:

1 FW course,* 1 FS course,* 1 FG course,* 2 DS courses* from different departments, 1 DP course,* PHYL 141/141L, PHYL 142/142L, MICR 130.

*Designated by UH Manoa as General Education courses. These may be found in the "Undergraduate General Education Requirements" section of this Catalog. Students already holding degrees or certificates are not exempt from these requirements.

This is from University of Hawaii at Manoa Catalog

Hope this helps

rockinitfreahhawaii, might want to double check on that 3 years. I know I have seen it, but I am not too sure if its for the teas (which I know for sure is good for 3 years) or also applies to the nln.

My Pre-req is 4.0 but my cum with my summer class is 3.8. I just took another practice test from the ati book and I got a 86% so i really really hope I do as good. im getting nervous.

CPO1893- UHM does not use medical experience as a criteria like kcc does. With your score for the nln (i think its easier too, I ran out of time on the verbal thats why I got 49) you have a much higher chance of being accepted into UH. I have 3 B's but none of which will be used as a part of my pre-req gpa for UH. They will use the highest grade to fill a certain qualification. ex. I got 2 B for AP1 and lab and 2 A for AP 2 and lab, but they will use AP 2 grades, which is the reason why my pre-req gpa is 4.0 with UH compared to 3.8 with KCC. I would just give it a shot, and its still not late to call UHM. I would call jennifer brown who is the pre-nursing advisor.

Thanks Ellers, I will request a sitdown with Ms. Brown. I ran through the UH application today and it seems fairly straight forward. Good job with your averages.

Hello,

I am from out of state and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to obtain a hard copy of the NLN score. When I took it at my school we got our results immediately after printed on a sheet of paper. I'm just wondering if a copy of that sheet would be acceptable. What does everyone think?

Hey Beansiesmileeze,

Go to the nln online testing website, which has the address https://www.nlnonlinetesting.org/cgi/login.pl After logging in, you should be directed to the testing page. Scroll to the bottom of that page and you should see an "Exam History" category. In that category it should show the NLN PAX test that you took. When you find the NLN test with the right test date, click on the button that says report in the "Options" subcategory. That should pop up a .pdf HARD COPY of your score, which you can print out.

If it says "Archived" in the status category on that testing page, you would have to request for a duplicate to be sent to your school. Here is the link https://www.nln.org/testingservices/duplicate.pdf Apparently, the score is only able to be seen by the test taker within 1 year of the test date. Mine was "archived" because I took it in 2011. I wanted to print out a hard copy and send it to UH-Manoa for my application, but I saw that my score was "archived". I then immediately called the nln online testing customer service, and they informed me of the timeline to view/print out my score. It cost $25 to send the hard copy to your school, but I think it's worth it if you believe you have a good chance of getting accepted into a certain program.

Anyways, I really hope this helps!

I believe UH-Manoa is the only program in Oahu that takes the NLN for their entrance exam. KCC only takes the ATI TEAS V. There are other private schools, but I don't know their entrance requirements.

Rockingit,

congrats on your TEAS, I think anything in the 80s is pretty good. I am debating on taking it again walk-in before turning in my app for KCC as the summer grades haven't rolled yet and I have my FAMR, Zool141, Zool142, and both labs on it. Rough summer, but got a lot knocked out. I am like you thinking to apply to UHM, I hear they take your best 16cr to include a Zool, Lab, Micro. I will also use my NLN but I dont know how to tell how well I did relative to each. For instance is a 99, 81, 80 NLN better than a 85 TEAS? you can only use one so how to tell which one? Damn 1 Sep is rolling up soon.

Thanks Cougar68! I hope my 81.3% makes up for my 3.4 prereq gpa.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you do on the TEAS? Above the 65% cutoff mark? I spoke to a KCC nursing adviser last week and she said that they lowered the score because not a lot of the resident students made the 78% mark. Because of that, they had to pull from the non-resident pool that made the 78% cut. I guess they want more resident students for their program this year :)

If I got a 99 on the NLN and 85% on the TEAS, I would use the NLN to apply. I choose the NLN because that's a higher score than the TEAS, and UH-Manoa's TEAS adjusted individual score cutoff is 80%. The NLN was a lot more difficult, in my opinion.

Yup! Sept 1 is not too far away. I need to get my UH application in this week. I didn't do too well on my NLN score...highest score is an 85 (reading) and the other two are 70's. My UH-Manoa pre-req GPA is a 3.7, but if they only take 16cr then it's a 4.0.

Good luck on your application Cougar68.

Rockingit,

I got a 78% on the TEAS but have a much higher NLN with everything in the 90s so I will use that for UHM but dont know how they compare if it were closer. My highest in the NLN was a 99 so I'll use that but the knock against me there is I have a degree from UHM which I slacked on and have a whopping 2.5 GPA. That effectively knocks me out pretty much, so even though I max out the pre-req with a 4.0 and the NLN, the Cum GPA kills my app (or so I have been told). Sooo KCC doesnt use my cum GPA so I have a much better chance with a 4.0 pre-req and a 78 TEAS. But its a one shot deal for me, I am on a clock for school so if it doesnt pan out I will be a pure biology major with hopes of maybe being a teacher or actually working as a scientist.

P.S. Rockingit,

I think from what I have been told by the advisors that you have a pretty competitive score for KCC and mentioned that they lower it even more again for Oct 2013 to 60% because of the difficulty level of the TEAS. I checked the website and it is in the announcement section. Dont know about it being so low though, I thought 78 was tough but achievable, but it still then depends on your other scores so I guess thats fair, having a high score still gives you an edge so no harm I suppose.
