Hi everyone :)
Does anyone else use KC in their units? I have been struggling to get this program started in our unit...finally the new school is getting the old school to be interested in Kangaroo Care.
I was able to get a sign ordered for our door that says, "ask us about Kangaroo Care"...we have been doing this for some time with the moms and the dads too...against much critisism, but now with all the research coming out...
We just went to Nils Bergmann conference in Sacto, all his information helped us....http://www.kangaroomothercare.org if you are so interested :)
Just curious.
Funny story...We had a very handsome daddy one time that LOVED to KC his babies. Their bed spots were closest to our nurses station. When he kangarooed there was often a line up of nurses at the desk, taking in the sites. We joked about "testing out" his chest to make sure it would be good enough for the babies. He was a lovely specimen!!
I would SOOOO much rather have that then when the baby seems to get swallowed up by dad's chest hair! Gross!!!!!
We kangaroo stable kids with lines and on the vent - not HFOV or while on nitric but that is because the baby is usually not stable enough to tolerate it.
My own two kids were 26 and 29 weekers and are now 14 and 11...I did kangaroo care when they were born, even on the vent - it was strongly encouraged.
OK, this is awful but we had one really attractive dad who loved to KC. He knew he was hot too. He'd take his shirt off and seductively rub hand sanitizer on his chest. It was hilarious! Or he'd just stand by his twin's isolettes shirtless, flexing his pecs.
I can only imagine what the more, ahem, experienced nurses would say when they saw that, LOL. He might be afraid to try it again
Most of our dads (who aren't that attractive BTW) tend to go the other way with their attire; it's their pants that hang low. Combining the two effects :imbar might well be illegal .

It may have been nice to look at, but what did mom think? I would not be happy if my bf/husband/significant other did that. But on the other hand, being female, it still would be nice to look at.......:innerconf

We highly encourage KC on our unit. It is common practice. Parents LOVE it as do the babes. We KC when babes are vented, w/lines, the whole bit. Just very careful every step of the way. Went to the Developmental Interventions in Neonatal Care conference a couple of years ago and listened to an RT that said at the hospital she works the KC on HFOV/HFJV. For the oscillator they have a special chair and keep the babe in the same plane as in the bed. It sounded really 'forward' to me, but so interesting. I have also started having mom/dad lift the infant from the bed into themselves then assist them to the chair. Just seems so much easier on the infant instead of the extra handling.
