All fluids infusing through a central line are filtered on the unit in which I work.

I'm glad you sound remorseful and I do hope you learned something from this experience...But can I just say, I think this is horrendous patient treatment. Never in all of my years of nursing practice have I felt the need to treat a patient like this and I've dealt with my fair share of neurologically comprised patients that were confused and not all there. Furthermore, this is called assault, the way to confess to treating this patient and it makes me furious to even read the things you did to this man that needed your help.

We highly encourage KC on our unit. It is common practice. Parents LOVE it as do the babes. We KC when babes are vented, w/lines, the whole bit. Just very careful every step of the way. Went to the Developmental Interventions in Neonatal Care conference a couple of years ago and listened to an RT that said at the hospital she works the KC on HFOV/HFJV. For the oscillator they have a special chair and keep the babe in the same plane as in the bed. It sounded really 'forward' to me, but so interesting. I have also started having mom/dad lift the infant from the bed into themselves then assist them to the chair. Just seems so much easier on the infant instead of the extra handling. Funny story...We had a very handsome daddy one time that LOVED to KC his babies. Their bed spots were closest to our nurses station. When he kangarooed there was often a line up of nurses at the desk, taking in the sites. We joked about "testing out" his chest to make sure it would be good enough for the babies. He was a lovely specimen!!

I absolutely talk to the babies. I let them know what I'm about to do... blame the 'bad' things on my co-workers...tell them what a good boy/girl they are and what a good job they are doing, etc. It's just something that is natural and seems wrong to me to not do it. Plus, sometimes they are the only ones that will listen to me. And unlike my own kids...they don't talk back.
