Hello everyone! I just wanted to create this for all those interested in the Kaiser Nurse Residency for new grads that has a start date of 9/11/2023. Also thought I would post the timeline below to help with any questions about when the next steps are taking place (per their webinar).
5/31-6/7: Application open
6/8-6/11: Candidate Survey (Snapshot)
6/20-6/30: Group Interviews
7/12: Hiring Decisions
7/17-7/26: HR Offer Days
7/31-9/8: HR Checks
9/11: Program Start
For all those who made it, Congratulations! May I ask something? Does Kaiser have blackout days for vacation? Like you can't take a time off during the holidays, for example? I just found out that you can't request time off from about Dec 18 to Jan 4 and I'm curious to know if it's the same at Kaiser.
What facility has that policy? I'm curious! I'm not 100% sure if the details of Kaiser yet, but as a new grad resident I do t expect to be able to take much, if any vacation for at least the first 6 months!! Everything is seniority based at Kaiser, so you may put in for vacation during high demand vacation periods, but you may not get it approved until you reach a certain level of seniority. That's my understanding this far at least.
It's a hospital in Fresno (CRMC) but my preceptor said "pretty much all hospitals are the same". I am aware of the no vacation during the first 6 months as a resident and of the seniority priority for vacation, but I just don't want to be in a situation when I'll never be able to spend any of the December holidays with my family again . You may be able to take one of the two holidays off just bot a chunk of time around either holiday, but all my family is abroad and if I want to spend a holiday with them it means having to take a couple of weeks off...
We do vacation bidding in March for the year. Yeah holidays is you sign up and if no one sign up they mandate shifts in Reverse seniority (lowest to high) yeah it's tough for vacation and holiday, even when the kids go back to school first day it's just hard to get off. Just know that. We on Kaiser time.

Thank you for your response. It sounds like it's difficult but not impossible, which is more in line to what I was expecting...

Do you have a limit to how many vacations you can bid for? Like I know we have a set number of vacation days, but if you know you won't likely get a requested vacation, do you request more vacation opportunities knowing you won't get many of them?
Just lurking on the forum haha, but thought I'd chime in about the vacation bidding part since I'm a new grad in the previous cohort!
You guys can still get vacation days, you can actually just trade with co workers or have someone cover you. It's pretty easy to do and alot of co workers need/ want certain days off outside their vacation bidding or are also new grads/new people with less seniority.
Also you accrue pto gradually over time with the # of hours worked.. I think I have about 50 hrs of PTO now and I've been at KP for about 10 mo now?
Moral of story, don't fret about PTO time and never getting to go on vaca with you fam! There are workarounds that everyone uses! :D

This is great to hear. Thank you for chipping in. I'm still an SRN so I won't be applying to Kaiser's residency program until January 2024. I'm really hoping to get in, though. Even more knowing that the hospital where I'm externing has that "no vacation during the holdays" rule. It's a shame because I really love the unit and the work where I'm at. I hope if I get into KP's program I'll be able to go into a specialty at some point too
