I'm just curious, does anyone know what percentage of nurses currently working, and/ or still in school, plan to stay working at the bedside as opposed to continuing on to other career options?

There's a few articles here from tnbutterfly about the recent salary survey that AN did. One of the questions had to do with leaving the profession, including leaving for other careers.

I saw that. In fact, that is kind of what got me to thinking about it. I personally prefer the bedside, but I work with a lot of others who have different plans. That was what made me wonder what percentage actually prefer bedside nursing as their career end game.

I like bedside. I have no aspirations to become an NP. But I also know I can't do bedside forever. It's exhausting. At some point, I may transition into a CS if possible.

I'm getting my MSN in leadership now but it's mostly to have it knocked out if I get injured, my body can't keep up with the floor years from now, or if a really great opportunity comes up.

I've watched too many nurses get side-swiped by Magnet and what the hospital/organization reads their terms out to be. The customer service model is grinding away at my soul as well...no thanks to Studer Group...

But bedside is where I'd like to be for at least another decade or so.

My husband spent 50K on getting an MSN in business to top off his BSN. REsult: 50K in debt with no change in job x 5 years.

According to the posts here, every new and graduating nurse expects dayshift, no holidays and six weeks of vacation from the start.
