i just passed the NCLEX/RN....what's next?

Are you a PR or do you have authorization to work in the US? If not it is going to be nearly impossible to find a job in th NY metro area with such a tight market and many new and experienced nurses still searching for work. You can't get a job without applying and having a good cover letter that catches a recruiter's eye within 60-90 seconds (the average time an HR rep spends scanning resumes after the online application system filters out those who meet minimum qualifications. ) Do you have any experience to offer?

Congratulation on passing your NCLEX!!!!

I was on Indeed.com or any job website at least 10 hours each day apply to every new grad position or residency.

I moved across the country for a job because my state is very limit for new grad. I do not know what NJ is like, but if it is like CA or AZ, maybe relocation will help.

Apply, apply, apply. It's a really tough market right now, especially for new graduated with no experience. Just apply to ask many jobs as you can.

I am planning to go for NJ as well, so I did my research and this was what I got so far, however I do have a lot of questions and I really do know where to begin.

There are five (5) elements that are now required for licensure of a foreign graduate as a nurse

in New Jersey including:

1. A transcript review performed by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools

(C.G.F.N.S.) (You are required to have the Full Education Course by Course Report.);

2. Proof that the applicant has achieved a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign

Language exam, TOEFL (C.G.F.N.S. is also providing English language evaluations) (Must be

submitted only to C.G.F.N.S.);

3. A completed licensure application for graduates of any foreign nursing program, which

includes information concerning the applicant’s educational and experiential background;

4. Criminal History Background Check clearance; and

5. Passing the appropriate NCLEX licensing examination.

For the requirement no.1 - I went to the CGFNS (CGFNS International but it says there are 2 types of reports and I'm not even sure if I'm on the right track.

For no. 2 - I understand that I would still need to take an exam, right?

For no. 4 - the application form asks for SSN, which I do not have.

Where is it that you live and plan to work? While many states are already requiring a SSN to sit for or receive a professional license, they all will soon as this is a federal requirement that is slowly being adopted by all US states and territories. For #2 you need to take an English language exam and meet the minimum standard. recently the NJBON decided to also accept two other standardized English language exams. The only way to secure a SSN is to be a citizen, Legal permanent resident or have a valid US work visa. It is my understanding that the NJBoN via the Dept of Community Affairs is starting to require a US SSN before issuing a professional license as per US Federal requirements. Fingerprints and social security number are the two elements required for the state/federal background check used by the NJBoN. I do not know if they will accept an international background check clearance.

If you are not already in the US, understand that the job market is very tight and local residents are having difficulty obtaining full time nursing jobs whether new grad or experienced nurses. Not to mention the 6+ year backlog in visas due to retrogression. I don't believe there are any NJ hospitals or other health care facilities currently sponsoring new applicants for work visas. The last time the two local health systems sponsored international nurses for visas was 2002 Due to the economy many work sponsor visa requests are being denied, and not just in healthcare. My former employer was a Canadian based company and had previously sponsored Canadians to work in the four US sites as they were already employees and familiar with corporate p&p (mostly for training, specialty, and management positions (not only nurses)) and were denied as there were qualified USC and PR who had applied for the position. My aunt's company was transitioning certain departments overseas and was denied visas to send US employees to the countries to train the international workers AND denied the visas to bring the international workers over on short term visas to train in the US.

You SHOULD consider applying in the state where you live, work, have a job offer, wish to work, or already have family ties so the transition will be easier. It is every expensive and time consuming to apply to any "easy" state for authorization to take the NCLEX and gain a US nursing license then attempt to transfer/endorse to your desired state.

I don't want to seem discouraging but I just want you to see the current reality of nurses in NJ.
