Just because I am your mom's friend please do not call me while i am on vacation and leave a message such as this one I recieved" I need you to write a school excuse so I can take the boys out of school for 2 days. I do not see your child in my office and for another thing my office is 120 miles from where your child goes to school. I am sorry but if I did not see your child I am not going to write a excuse for school. Yes I do have samples in the office, I reserve these for my pt's who have no insurance. So please do not ask me if I have some Z-packs can I get you some because you think you have a sinus infection. No I will not call in a rx for amoxicillin because you think your child may have an ear infection and you want to go on vacation and have it just in case. My malpractice covers me at my job not my home/Please do not call me at home and ask me to diagnose little janes rash that you think is measles, I am sorry i vented so long but this is happening more often than i would like and I am about ready to ask them for their insuranc info so I can bill them for a phone call LOL. I tell them no to their requests.

LOL - I'm seeing more of this too.
Our big employer in our area, Caterpillar is thinking about getting rid of ALL healthcare benefits and just paying the fine the government is going to impose because it would be cheaper.
I think we are going to see more of this.

I got a request from my neighbor one week before I graduated !
I just smile really sweet and say "I REALLY wish I could but I would lose my license because you are not a patient at the office where I work. "

My sister has asked me for cipro to "have on hand" in case she gets a UTI. Um...sorry...I love you but I'm not your provider...call your own PCP.

We all get this. The universal answer has been given. You can apply whatever twist you like, but "it's illegal, and I could lose my license, job, and career, and be arrested" usually works for me.

I am currently the ADON at a SNF. Our medical director writes prescriptions all the time for any employee who asks for somethng, from refilling their meds, to ATB or most anything else.
He does not even have a practice. He retired and just does nursing home work. I don't understand why he does this. I'm sure he is well aware of the regulations but he has done it for as long as I have known him, many years!

Oh, that is scary! What if he wrote an Rx for someone who was allergic to that med, or they had some kind of crazy reaction and died? Who is following them on these meds? Maybe he likes being needed by people, that they come to him? Scary!
Turn them into the board of healing arts. You have a legal and moral obligation to do so.

It is not completely illegal, it can be done, just probably shouldn't be done on a regular basis.
