Thought this might interest those of you who are operating under the belief that you are "safe" from unwanted charges if you change the expiration date on your credit card. You are not.
Recent discussions about Pearson Vue accepting a valid card with an expired date piqued my interest more than usual. So I just went to an online retailer that I have used before, and made a purchase. I changed my account information so that the card's expiration date is different (and in the past), and then submitted my order.
Guess what? My item is now on its way to me! Expired card and all...except it ISN'T expired, it's valid, so my bank will make good on my authorized payment. And I wouldn't dare dream of challenging it, LOL, as I do want the thing I just bought
Pearson Vue has attempted charges to a card that had no funds, and people receive a "card declined" message. That's because the card was NOT VALID, there was no way for PV to collect funds on an account that can't be tapped for payment. Some of those people pass, and some fail. Means nothing other than the candidate confirmed that their Happy Birthday WalMart gift card had no $ on it, or at least that it was less than $200. FWIW, I also remember some weird anomaly in which someone had five bucks on a gift card, kept submitting over and over and over until PV TOOK the charge, collected the five bucks that was available, but did NOT give the person a new registration (after all, they were $195 short!). THAT was a mess.
Be smart, be careful, and think before doing this game, hmm?
My bank must be better than average. They caught it when an expired card was inadvertently used. So I'm a little less irritated by the monthly fee.
I felt the same way. Hello, I am a Nigerian prince looking to give away my fortune. In order to send you some, I'll need your bank name, account number, routing number, social security number, mother's maiden name…
I know a nurse who fell for one of those ::::shudder::::

LOL, the credit card I use most of the time (and in this scenario) only makes money when I use the card, as they collect no monthly fees, and I have no other banking done through them. And it's a major, nationally-recognized bank. Might have more incentive to let the charge go through, since I'm good for it . And the online retailer accepted the payment, so...there ya go.
You know someone who FELL for that time-worn Nigerian prince story?! Seriously dumb individual.
I have a dear friend who is a sucker for sob stories delivered via email. She's even been known to FORWARD the ones with the most dire situations to her church e-list so they can "help" the poor soul in question. When I got one of them, I made sure to let her know it was a scam, and how long that scam had been running....even how they got her name. She thought I was probably wrong, THIS one seemed so GENUINE...oh well. At least she hadn't sent any money!
If this is what's keeping nursing textbook prices down, I want to say thanks, otherwise it may move into the expensive range.I'm not sure if Pearson Higher Education & Pearson Vue benefit from each other, nor do I have time to research that.
Ok.....what? Sarcasm about nursing textbooks being expensive, that I got (and agree!). The rest...not a clue what you mean, LOL..

Yes! Since she was a nurse as well, it almost made me rethink my indignant reaction to those trollish "nurses are dumb" threads we get from bored outsiders on Spring Break! Choosing to believe it was an aberration.

Yeah, sometimes I'll take a day or two off, let things ride. And eventually, the whine of "it took my $200, does this mean I failed?!?" will get to me enough to respond. Or to someone who is talking about planning to enter credit card information every hour until they get the official notice. Yeah....that's a good idea.
I have never responded "Oh, you paid/card denied? Then yes, you absolutely 100% have failed. Total Screwed-ville for you, buddy". But maybe one day.
Nah....won't do that. Sometimes they do pass! And I really do see most of the people who fall into this PVT trap as just being their own worst enemies, and I'm trying to be a friend. Some of them get it, realize they ought to hear what JustBeachyNurse and several others have tried to tell them.....and some are just belligerent, and therefore cannot be helped. I mean, where do you go with "I did it and my friend did it and four people he knows did it, and it WORKED for them, so based on these six cases out of the entire world, the evidence is clear that it works 100% of the time!!"
