Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I'm a new nurse (LVN/ LPN ) in cali. and wondering where the least stressful place would be to work ? I'm thinking a doctor's office or a school nurse ? I don't want to work in a hospital ... Anyone have any good ideas ? :woot:

Most wont take you without hospital experience, and those are some coveted spots! Good luck

I wish you much luck.

Please keep us informed through future posts of your successes and failures job hunting. You may become an inspiration to others who are having an abundantly difficult time in the over saturated LPN California market.

Thank you ! I will keep everyone posted : )

I'm also thinking about ICF ?

All places have their own stress levels. They may be different stresses, but I know of no job that isn't stressful anymore. I wish you the best of luck in your search!

I'm finishing up a stint as a school nurse (only 2 more days after today!) and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's something I'll NEVER do again. Getting ready to start at a VA clinic, making $34k annually to start. But most places want you to do your time in a hospital (or even LTC) before they'll hire a new grad. Tough out a year somewhere then start looking for a clinic or something. Good clinic jobs are very difficult to get, as the turnover isn't frequent. And you've got to have something to make you stand out from the ton of other nurses applying.

Specializes in 4.

Working in a Dr's office is very stressful. Maybe if you worked part-time or worked for a Dr's office that wasn't busy, then it wouldn't be too bad. I work in a hospital & absolutely love it. Finding a job that isn't stressful is a hard thing to do, especially in our profession. Everyone is different, so hard for anyone to say what you won't find to be stressful. Good luck to you in your search.

Why did you hate it so much ??

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Here are my personal thoughts on this issue. . .there are very few 'low stress' jobs in nursing. The nursing profession, by its very nature, is stressful. Dealing with patients who can be verbally abusive, family members who displace their anger upon you, doctors who can be rude, and nurse managers who forget what it is like to be in the trenches are all aspects that create stress.

So whether you are working in a clinic, hospital, home health agency, nursing home, or other type of healthcare setting, you will experience stress. Good luck to you.

Least stressful would probably be an LVN in a school district. You're not the "School Nurse" though, the RN is.

My first job was an LVN with my local school district, most of the school districts in and around my county dont require experience (you usually just need 3 letters of reference). But the bad part is the most hours youll get a week is about 30 unless you're assigned to a special needs child who needs you to ride the bus to school with them.

Our clinical rotation for ped/maternity in my LVN program was with our school district since the other sites were taken up and impacted with RN students, so I think thats why they love to hire us because they know we know what to expect.

Most of the time I am at my school sites alone so while most days are "low stress" and routine things like ADHD meds and maybe one or two diabetic kids, When an emergency comes up you have to respond alone until the RN shows up. I had this happen to me a few months in, I had to call 911 in the process. Everything turned out fine, but it was very scary.

Also the start of the school year and the end are HECTIC, theres so much to do I often dont take my break or lunch. Then there are parents that you have to deal with, some are awesome and others with be mad at you no matter what you do and always run and tell any and everyone above you.
