Hello all. YES, I just finished school this past Tuesday. I am going to take the NCLEX hopefully by End of February, does that sound like enough time?? Also, I have a job that I accepted. It is ROTATING days/night, 3 twelve hour shifts. It will be rotating every four weeks. I have NEVER worked nights in my life and am afraid of this. It is my only concern coming into a new journey, "as of right now", my only concern. Any tips, pointers, etc??? I don't want to pass this job up because of this. PLEASE HELP.

I took my NCLEX the same month I graduated. Our program included completion of HESIs that covered all of the course information. I figured it was best to take the test while everything was fresh in my mind. I do test well and did well on all the HESIs, though. I found one of our books that discussed prioritization and delegation to be really helpful since it was more conceptual to help with "harder" questions.

Dropped the "o" on that one, didn't you?

NCLEX was called State Boards when I took my LPN boards in 1984 and RN boards in 1990. I took both within a few months of graduating, so it was time enough back then. And congratulations on finishing school!

As far as the rotating shifts, when I was young I had no problem transitioning my sleep schedule. Four weeks is a good time frame. When I was going for my RN, I worked as many as three different shifts in one week.

I worked MNs for the final 17 years of my career and stayed on a MN schedule on my days off. At age 63, I could not have transitioned without becoming psychotic and going postal.

 Good luck to you, FitnessPleese!

HELLO, LOL. You really summed it up. Thank you. Yes, it is a job in Oncology, I want this. Just nervous about the night time part.

I hear you. When I worked MNs back in the '80's, I loathed them.

Once I got into a routine, MNs became my fav.

Hang in there, FitnessPleese. There are a lot of good threads on working MNs- try putting that in the search option and check them out.

Who knows? MNs may just turn out to be your cup of tea!

I was a weird one. I found nights to be my favorite time. I actually worked night shifts for about 7 years.. until 3 months ago when I did a career change to a "day job" in an area of interest.  Nights may give you more time to spend with your patient and to learn about their disease process, read notes, etc.  Daytime always felt like meals and insulin and trying to get all the charting done. Nights have fewer med passes, and as some patients may sleep at night, others can get some of your time when you're not rushing around with your head chopped off. And almost always had a nice amount of time for lunch by 2am. ?

I am not sure >>> MN, what does this mean??

MNs=midnights: 2300-0700 or 1900-0700

MN - "Midnights" overnight shift.. usually 7p-7a or 11p-7a usually.
