To grandee3: I actually started in Jul 03, had a couple of set backs, plus with my work; however, I actually planned to take about 2 years as if I were attending "traditional" nursing schooling (I am an in-depth learner and I just did not want to be a "text-book nurse" as sometimes Excelsior nurses are "classified" as..........................as far as the CPNE goes, once you complete all of your Nursing Concepts finals, you are eligible for the CPNE providing you are within 9 hours of having all of your "generals" done. I have only LIFESPAN to finish up.........and will be working on that while waiting for my CPNE date.......................
To vidofire249: I am so sorry to hear of your back experiences with the CPNE and your feelings towards EC. I can understand you regretting going through the program at this point. However, I must ask (especially with the number of successes out there and there are a LOT), what is your background, how much prep did you do, did nerves get the best of you, et al? The three main things that truly do get people in this CPNE process is (1) bad habits developed as a result of being experience in a hospital/clinical setting, and also over-confidence as a result which leads to (2) NOT be adequately prepared, as such, for many reasons, or (3) sheer nerves get you and small errors get you big time (especially in the Critical Elements).......................
Additionally, if you feel that you truly should have passed, there is an appeals process of which you can go through, and some have, and with success too......................if you feel you have grounds that the CA's/CE are not being fair, and that "it is a big game form them to fail people", then by all means it should be brought to EC's attention. Have really good documentation as such..............................
EC is NOT an easy program at all, that is for sure, and it irks me when I have seen (on other sites) posts that it's an easy way out for those who don't go to "traditional" nursing programs....................baloney on that one!!!!........................and the CPNE is definitely one of THE MOST challenging things one will do in their life, no doubt.........I have done a lot of performance based exams, and most were pretty danged tough, but in all honesty, NONE compare to what we all have to go through for this CPNE and to graduate from EC's nursing program.
I truly do wish you the best of luck, and I hope you will talk to somebody in EC or file an appeal............................not knowing the entire situation/experiences you had..........this is the best I can advise at this point................I have heard that there have been some CE/CA's out there who have not been the best that should be and complaints have been filed as such, and positive results.......but those CE/CA's are few, thank goodness, compared to the really good ones that EC has. People are people, regardless, and some can be royal jerks and think they have a point to prove as such..........................especially when it comes to performance-based type examinations.......again, I have seen it a lot............it's most unfortunate......................I dont' know what else to suggest or say at this point.......................again, try the appeal process if you feel you have solid grounds, and best of luck to you..................
:wink2:
taking nursing concepts 7 friday, and planning for cpne in new york, hopefully in march. i'm getting myself on the cancellation lists as well. so far, i've found the program to be very straightforward.
i'm buying the tape from excelsior, and the practice kit. that's about all i'm doing, since i can't get loose to go to a cpne prep course. i'll prepare obsessively, so i won't fail from lack of effort.
it's interesting the number reporting failure here since i've heard from excelsior that the pass rate approaches 70%.
anyone else have any recent cpne experiences to share? and best of luck to all those taking the exam!
EC is Excelsior College.....CPNE is Clinical Nurse Performance Exam....A weekend od having all your skills observed and evaluated in person with actual patients in an acute hospital. As far as the person who is starting out..contact EC. These other "study systems" are not credit granting institutions and are"supplemental" at best. EC provides free exam content guides and for fee practice exams. You can also talk to an advisor. http://WWW.Excelsior.edu

I am so sorry that happened to you.
I'm an EC grad and I too, believe that it's a game as well.
But I also think that most, if not all, nursing schools are a big game.
My LPN school played games, my BSN school is playing games.
All politics.
